So what's happening with the YV movement these days? Looks like they've joined forces with the labor union movement in a general strike starting Dec 5–and causing a drop of almost 50% in Christmas sales as of last week.
French Unions and Yellow Vests Converge, Launch General Strike

On the eve of an “unlimited” (open-ended) General Strike called for Dec. 5, more and more unions and protest groups are pledging join it.
Two things are unusual about this strike. The first is that it is open-ended, rather than the usual one-day of ritualistic protest marches, and may be prolonged from day to day by workers’ assemblies. The second is that the Yellow Vests, the self-organized, horizontal, social movement that sprung up spontaneously just over a year ago and is still popular despite severe repression, have decided to converge with the strike, and that the CGT’s Martinez, who had originally spurned the Yellow Vests, immediately welcomed them, making for a heady mix. For the union leaders, who try to control their followers tightly, the Yellow Vests are like a loose canon on the deck of a ship. Who knows what may result?

French Strike Is Worse Than Yellow Vests for Holiday Retail

In Paris, where public transit workers have been on a walkout since Dec. 5, members including electronics retailer Fnac Darty SA and Inditex SA’s Zara brand reported an average drop in sales of 25% to 30% for the second week of December.
The decline, compiled by specialty retail federation Procos, follows a weak performance a year earlier, when weekend demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron shut down the city’s most popular shopping districts. Compared with the more typical figures from 2017, sales last week were 40% to 45% lower.

Los Angeles Prosecutors Are Reviewing Eight Cases Against Harvey Weinstein

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors in Los Angeles are reviewing eight cases accusing disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, an official said Thursday.
The Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments each brought four investigations to prosecutors, according to Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The office will decide whether to move forward with prosecution. No charges have been filed, Santiago said. He did not know details about the allegations or when the cases were presented to prosecutors.
Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s publicist, said he had “nothing to add right now” in an email to The Associated Press.
District Attorney Jackie Lacey created a task force more than two years ago to handle the surge in sexual misconduct allegations against entertainment figures after the accusations against Weinstein launched the #MeToo movement. He has denied allegations of nonconsensual sex.
No charges have been filed against 22 men — including Weinstein, actor Kevin Spacey, director James Toback and former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves — who were the focus of the task force’s investigations. All of them have denied wrongdoing.
Charges have already been rejected for most, mainly because the statute of limitations had expired or there was insufficient evidence.
Dozens of women, including actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o and Ashley Judd, have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment, while actresses Asia Argento, Rose McGowan and others have accused the Oscar winner of raping them.
Weinstein is scheduled to stand trial Jan. 6 in New York on charges he raped a woman in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and performed a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006. He has pleaded not guilty and says any sexual activity was consensual.
A tentative global settlement reached this month would split $25 million among more than two dozen of Weinstein’s accusers. The deal wouldn’t require him to pay anything out of his own pocket and he wouldn’t have to admit wrongdoing.

Japan's NHK Delivers Erroneous North Korean 'Christmas Gift'

TOKYO — Japanese public broadcaster NHK on Friday sent a news bulletin that incorrectly reported North Korea had launched a missile that fell into waters east of the Japanese archipelago, issuing an apology explaining it was a media training alert.
The news alert came as the United States and its East Asian allies have been on tenterhooks after Pyongyang's warning this month of a possible "Christmas gift" for Washington in what experts took to mean a possible long-range missile test.
The NHK bulletin, sent out 22 minutes after midnight on its website, read: "North Korean missile seen as having fallen into seas about 2,000 km east of Hokkaido's Cape Erimo", suggesting a flight path over Japanese territory. The same information was also delivered to users' phones through NHK's apps.
NHK corrected the information on those platforms, as well as on television and radio within half an hour, an NHK spokesman said.

Of course, NYT is resting on its historical reputation. And also the fact that it will lose its credibility if it lies too often. As well as the fact that it can be sued.
Trying to vet sources is a challenge right now, bc traditionally trustworthy (or at least semi-trustworthy sources) sometimes go widely off the rails in ways we've never seen before. There ARE sources we consider pretty credible, although none is always correct. (Just look at the story above your post on NHK–they just made a huge mistake.)
There's a discussion upriver on whether an anon's story should be accepted as true or not–or whether it requires sauce. If so, what kind of sauce?
Often, anon analyses are not notabled, even if they are well-reasoned for the same reason. Takes time to read and think about it (time bakers usually don't have). Even if baker does have time, he may not want to be the one to make a decision wo/backing from some other source.
Non-trivial problem. We do a pretty good job given all these factors. But good to think about these questions and discuss during off-hours like graveyard.
