Time is just essentially a linear experience of each universe of NOW. A timeline. Each action also makes an alternate timeline. Turn right, left, or go straight it slightly changes everyone's timeline.
Basically if you can view all the most probable timeilnes within a few month period you can look and see what actions are needed to choose the future you want to be in by altering your actions to fit the path to get there.
The Quibit in quantum computing is an important key.
Instead of there being just a yes or no for each bit of information, each bit will show the probability of several options just like reality of the hydrogen electron orbit or the wave function vs physical function of a quark.
The Qubit will have be sampled several times or connected to interact with other Qubits to create a 'yes/no' situation. The numbers of time to get a sampling of very near one or zero will show how probable or improbable an event is - much like a fractal iteration or a calculus derivative.

Likely that the 'cube of water' was actually a quantum computer and the chair was input device.
This would make a great navigation system for interstellar travel if the 'sitter' was versed in the math and theory of interstellar travel.
