Islamic State in Nigeria 'beheads Christian hostages'

The Islamic State group has released a video claiming to show the killing of 11 Christians in Nigeria.

IS said it was part of its recently declared campaign to "avenge" the October deaths of its leader and spokesman in Syria.

No details were given about the victims, who were all male, but IS says they were "captured in the past weeks" in Nigeria's north-eastern Borno State.

The 56-second video was produced by IS's "news agency" Amaq.

It was released on 26 December and analysts say it was clearly timed to coincide with Christmas celebrations.

The footage was filmed in an unidentified outdoor area.

One captive in the middle is shot dead while the other 10 are pushed to the ground and beheaded.

IS's late leader and spokesman Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abul-Hasan Al-Muhajir were killed in Syria in late October. Nearly two months later, on 22 December, IS declared a new militant campaign to "avenge" their deaths and has since claimed a flurry of attacks in various countries under the banner of that campaign.

One faction of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram now fights under the banner of "Islamic State West Africa Province" (Iswap).

Last year, Iswap killed two midwives it had previously taken hostage.

China's GDP data release always generates great market excitement despite rarely straying more than 25 basis points below or above the government target. This stability has led a number of analysts to propose their own measures, typically based on a variety of Chinese proxy data but, in the end, not that different from the official numbers. In this article I argue that, based on the performance of countries comparable to China, the latter's GDP growth could be as low as half the official number and that markets are likely overestimating China's importance for the global economy. That being said, China has one of the highest levels of corporate debt in the world and slower growth implies greater risks of financial instability.

Does House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) still believe she’s in control of her party in the House?

And she ought to be aware of what other elected lawmakers in the House are saying about this (not that it hasn’t been said before).

Earlier this year in this impeachment rush against President Donald Trump, she proclaimed that she was not in favor of impeachment unless there was compelling, overwhelming and bipartisan support for it.

That went out the window pretty fast as other Democrats pushed her to take action.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) (shown above right, at the top of this article) — the House GOP whip — spoke on Thursday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” to guest host Jason Chaffetz about what’s happened to Pelosi and the Democrats overall this past year.

Operation Mockingbird

In 1948 Frank Wisner was appointed director of the Office of Special Projects. Soon afterwards it was renamed the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC). This became the espionage and counter-intelligence branch of the Central Intelligence Agency. Wisner was told to create an organization that concentrated on "propaganda, economic warfare; preventive direct action, including sabotage, anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures; subversion against hostile states, including assistance to underground resistance groups, and support of indigenous anti-Communist elements in threatened countries of the free world."

Later that year Wisner established Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic American media. Wisner recruited Philip Graham (Washington Post) to run the project within the industry. Graham himself recruited others who had worked for military intelligence during the war. This included James Truitt, Russell Wiggins, Phil Geyelin, John Hayes and Alan Barth. Others like Stewart Alsop, Joseph Alsop and James Reston, were recruited from within the Georgetown Set. According to Deborah Davis, the author of Katharine the Great (1979) : "By the early 1950s, Wisner 'owned' respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communications vehicles."

In 1951 Allen W. Dulles persuaded Cord Meyer to join the CIA. However, there is evidence that he was recruited several years earlier and had been spying on the liberal organizations he had been a member of in the later 1940s. According to Deborah Davis, Meyer became Mockingbird's "principal operative".

Vox Admits Trump's Judicial Appointments More Qualified Than Obama's

Although Vox senior correspondent Ian Millhiser spent much of his December 19 article ("What Trump has done to the courts, explained") worrying that "No president in recent memory has done more to change the judiciary than Donald Trump," he also granted the surprising concession that the judicial appointments have been highly qualified. Indeed, more qualified than the federal court picks of his predecessor, Barack Obama.

Millhiser's worried about the number of federal court appointments right from the start but even amidst the angst one can detect him admitting that his picks have been some of the "smartest" men and women.

In less than three years as president, President Trump has done nearly as much to shape the courts as President Obama did in eight years.

Trump hasn’t simply given lots of lifetime appointments to lots of lawyers. He’s filled the bench with some of the smartest, and some of the most ideologically reliable, men and women to be found in the conservative movement. Long after Trump leaves office, these judges will shape American law — pushing it further and further to the right even if the voters soundly reject Trumpism in 2020.

Moment US and Syrian troops come face to face in northeast Syria: video

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:20 P.M.) – A new video that was released on Friday showed U.S. military personnel and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) troops coming face-to-face in northeastern Syria.

The video shows a Syrian soldier (some pages said he was an officer), as he faces an American patrol in the eastern Euphrates.

The Syrian Army soldier tells the U.S. patrol:

“You are occupiers, and you will leave Syria either today or tomorrow.”

Donald Trump won convincing victories Tuesday in the Michigan and Mississippi primaries, as well as the caucuses in Hawaii, suggesting that the intensified GOP establishment assault on Trump’s character and record had not yet wounded the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

In Michigan and Mississippi, Trump galvanized huge populations of white working-class voters with his populist economic pitch, nativist rhetoric and outsider appeal to win by double-digit margins, further solidifying the billionaire mogul’s lead in the rollicking nomination battle.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) came in second in the Hawaii caucuses. But he won Idaho decisively, followed by Trump in second and trailed by Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Seven Dearborn residents and three others from Dearborn Heights were charged Wednesday with multiple counts of pharmaceutical fraud for their alleged involvement in a $46 million insurance scam.

Dearborn residents Mohamad Abou-Khodr, 30; Nabil Chehadeh, 39; Ali El-Moussawi, 29; Bassem Farhat, 46; Hussein Wazne, 50; Bahia Zeidan, 28; and Suzan Berro, 20, along with Dearborn Heights residents Hussein Abdallah, 36; Daniel Haidar, 30; and Linda Fawaz, 25, were charged by United States Attorney Matthew Schneider with the fraud.

A federal grand jury indicted the 10 people on charges including wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering.

The indictment alleges that between January 2014 and November 2019, the 10 people received more than $46 million in reimbursement claims from various co-pay assistance programs. The indictment alleges that all of the money was fraudulently obtained.
