Trump didn't win because the RNC helped him.
He won by himself, with the full weight of the Machine against him.
I voted for Trump as an independent last time, too.

If he runs as just himself, he won't be saddled with someone else's VP pick this time around.

Well yeah, it'll work out that way.. I've had this gut feel re- Pence since the RNC assigned him to Trump as the 'entry fee' to the nom noms…

It would. Pence has played ball, so curbing him would be bad optics either way (ie- whether he is comped or freed is irrelevant here).
It'll be interesting to see if Pence is a Patriot or a Traitor when the chips are down. Jury is still out, here.
