Correct, if the father of the baby is Rh+ and the mother is Rh-, she has to have a RhoGAM shot.

Before the shots were available, if the baby was Rh+, the mom's antibodies would attack the baby in utero and the baby wouldn't survive.

So maybe that's why they kept track of bloodlines, to insure more offspring thrived.
