Pollak: Media, Tech Self-Censorship over ‘Whistleblower’ Marks Death of Free Press in United States

The United States of America no longer has a free press as of December 2019.

Press freedom was already in danger, as Mark Levin noted, as journalists became political activists in the Obama era, and feuded with the president in the Trump era. But press freedom could have thrived in a more openly partisan marketplace of ideas. In the end, press freedom was killed by the press itself, in the decision not to report the name of the so-called “whistleblower” in the impeachment crisis.

His name — which Breitbart News published after it was first revealed by RealClearInvestigations — is no mystery. Apparently, his identity was the worst-kept secret in Washington, D.C. The Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) concluded in September that the “whistleblower,” a CIA employee, had shown “political bias,” and favored “a rival political candidate,” most likely former Vice President Joe Biden, for whom he reportedly worked.

The “whistleblower” triggered a process that could still lead to the ouster of the president. (His own lawyer, Mark S. Zaid, called for a “coup,” via impeachment, in January 2017, shortly after Trump had taken office.)

It would seem extraordinary for the world’s leading democracy to allow an election to be overturned based on the actions of a rogue CIA employee working with the opposition — and even stranger not to be told his name.

Moreover, the “whistleblower” himself admitted that he did not have first-hand information of the events he had described. It would seem an urgent matter of national security, and public interest, to know who was feeing him information — whether it was an enemy, foreign or domestic.

If the hysteria over Russian influence in the 2016 election had any useful lesson, it was that we ought to be curious about where information comes from, and why.

Yet the media have not only ignored the “whistleblower’s” name, but they have also actively suppressed it. That includes the conservative media.

Earlier this year, I appeared on a morning show in Los Angeles to discuss the impeachment inquiry. The moment I mentioned the name of the “whistleblower,” the hosts ended the interview.

The reason is twofold. First, most media outlets share the Democrats’ desire to be rid of Trump, and so joined them in pretending the “whistleblower” was protected by law. Federal law protects whistleblowers from retaliation, but they can often expect to be identified. The relevant law, the Intelligence Community Whistleblower Protection Act, only prevents the ICIG from identifying the whistleblower. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, (D-CA) invented a statutory right to whistleblower anonymity that he later tacitly admitted did not exist.

After insisting that the “whistleblower” be allowed to testify, Schiff and the Democrats reversed themselves — once they were revealed to have lied to the public about their prior contact with him.

That ought to have made the media more curious, not less curious, about who the “whistleblower” was, and what his motivations and methods had been. Schiff then made up the idea that making the “whistleblower’s” name known would expose him to mortal danger. The media, who routinely ruin lives by publishing the names of both the guilty and the innocent, bought that line.

Second, the tech companies punished news outlets that dared to publish the name of the so-called “whistleblower.” Though tech giants like Facebook enjoy immunity from libel lawsuits under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, they behaved as if publishing the “whistleblower’s” name would expose them to serious legal risk.

Any media outlet that wanted to share its content online — in other words, any media company that wanted to stay in business — had to suppress the name of the so-called “whistleblower” in impeachment coverage.

It was a Catch-22: Facebook et al. would not allow the name until it became more widely published, but it could not become more widely published because Facebook et al. were suppressing it.

The tech giants had imposed a code of censorship, and the mainstream media, supposedly so sensitive to any threat to press freedom, (mostly) willingly complied.

The most consequential political fact of our lifetimes, sitting in plain view, cannot be mentioned. The press cannot fulfill the purpose for which its freedom exists: namely, to inform the citizens of a democratic republic.

And unlike official government suppression, this cannot be challenged in court. It is, in a way, a more brutal form of censorship.

AOC Slams Buttigieg for Being ‘Funded by Billionaires’ but Accepted Funds from Billionaire Tom Steyer

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) accepted a significant donation in August 2018 from billionaire and 2020 presidential candidate Tom Steyer.

Ocasio-Cortez criticized South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) during a rally for presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) Saturday in Los Angeles, California, for hosting a fundraiser with billionaires present, according to Fox Business.

She stated:

For anyone who accuses us of instituting purity tests, it’s called having values. It’s called giving a damn. It’s called having standards for your conduct, to not be funded by billionaires but to be funded by the people, which is different. Let me tell you something… I go to work all the time and I hear people say, “what will my donors think?; I hear that phrase. And I hear and I see that billionaires get members of Congress on speed dial and waitresses don’t, okay? There’s a difference.”

The long-time Democrat gave $2,700 to Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign on August 29, 2018, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

Steyer’s presidential campaign website stated that “Tom has worked directly with people to take on big corporations and win” and that he planned to “break the corporate stranglehold on our government, and enact the structural reforms we need to save our democracy.”

At the rally Saturday, Sanders also took a shot at Buttigieg for his “purity test” comments to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) during the Democrat debate last week.

Sanders continued:

We don’t go to rich people’s wine caves. This is a campaign of the working class of this country, by the working class, and for the working class. Our campaign has received more contributions from more people than any candidate in the history of the United States of America. We don’t have a super PAC. We don’t want a super PAC.

Sanders’ campaign raked in more than $1 million in donations during last Thursday’s debate, according to Breitbart News.

Tom Hanks may officially consider himself Greek.

Greece’s President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has signed an honorary naturalization order allowing the 63-year-old actor to claim Greek citizenship, his office told The Associated Press on Friday.

Hanks frequently spends his summer vacation on the Greek island of Antiparos and his wife, actress and producer Rita Wilson, is of Greek and Bulgarian ancestry.

Under Greek law, honorary naturalization may be granted to people “who have provided exceptional services to the country or whose naturalization serves the public interest.”

“Opposing Interventionism In Nation X Means You Love Nation X’s Government!”

Every time you speak out against Western imperialism in a given nation or question Western propaganda narratives about that nation’s government, you will inevitably be accused of loving that nation’s government by anyone who argues with you.

When I say “inevitably”, I am not exaggerating. If you speak in any public forum for any length of time expressing skepticism of what we’re told to believe about a nation whose government has been targeted by the US-centralized empire, you will with absolute certainty eventually run into someone who accuses you of thinking that that government is awesome and pure and good.

I have never, ever had this fail to occur, even once. If I write an article about the mountain of evidence suggesting we were lied to about a chemical attack in Syria, I get people telling me I think Bashar al-Assad is a girl scout who’s never ever done anything wrong. If I express skepticism of the flimsy narratives we’re being fed in the escalating propaganda war against China, I get “If you love Beijing so much and think Xi is so innocent you should go and move to China!” It’s one of the only completely predictable things about this job.

Which is of course idiotic. Understanding that the US government and its allies lie constantly with the full-throated support of Western news media in no way suggests a belief that the targeted government in question is wonderful, and there’s absolutely no legitimate reason to infer such a thing. The indisputable fact that US-led military interventionism is universally disastrous and based on lies has nothing to do with anyone’s level of emotional support for the governments targeted for destruction by the US-centralized empire. Yet everyone reading this who’s ever tried to speak out against US foreign policy has encountered the behavior I’m describing here.

Why is that? Why do establishment loyalists engage in such a weird, nonsensical behavior with such reliable consistency? Why do they literally always accuse anyone who questions any narrative about any empire-targeted government of having positive emotions toward that government, even though there is no rational reason for them to do so?

I’ll tell you why: Hollywood.

Well, not just Hollywood. Really the dynamic we’re about to discuss has been going on for as long as there have been war stories. But the dominant storytellers of today are in Hollywood, and that’s where the dominant war stories are told.

For as long as war stories have been told, those stories have been framed as a battle between good and evil. The good side is the side you identify with, and the evil side is the one you want to lose. You see this in almost all depictions of war coming out of Hollywood today, from movies based on actual wars to sci-fi and fantasy films like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Over and over and over again from childhood we are trained to assume that mass military violence must have a Good side and an Evil side, so when we see a war being depicted anywhere we immediately start trying to sort out who are the Good Guys and who are the Bad Guys, usually without even thinking about it.

Obviously, war isn’t actually about Good versus Evil; usually it’s nothing more noble than geostrategic agenda versus geostrategic agenda. But because people are conditioned from an early age to overlay any ideas about large-scale conflict with this false Good or Evil dichotomy, there’s an immediate assumption that if you’re suggesting that one side might not be Good, then the other side are the Good Guys. If you say the government pushing regime change in Iran is doing something immoral, then you’re saying they’re the Bad Guys, which means you think the Iranian government are the Good Guys.

Yes, the behavior in question really does boil down to something that stupid. This phenomenon where empire apologists will predictably accuse you of loving an empire-targeted nation just because you oppose imperialist agendas is primarily due to a combination of dumb binary thinking and watching too many Hollywood movies. In other words, it’s due to bad information meeting bad thinking.

All we can really do to address this dynamic is bring consciousness to it. When someone’s acting out the unexamined assumption that because you are critical of western imperialism you must necessarily believe that all of its targets are perfect and wonderful, you can point out the absurdity of this position and invite them to think a little harder about it. Or just link them to this article.

Beyond that, all you can really do is understand what you’re looking at, roll your eyes, and sigh.

'Holocaust awareness is essential for our war on antisemitism'

Yad Vashem: Educating on the Holocaust, fighting against antisemitism

Some 40 leaders of nations from President Putin to Prince Charles will gather at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, on 23 January 2020 for an unprecedented event in Israel.

The Fifth World Holocaust Forum takes place on the backdrop of the rise in antisemitism around the world marking the 75th anniversary to the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and International Holocaust Remembrance Day. All eyes will be focused on the messages emanating from the World Holocaust Forum under the banner “Remembering the Holocaust, Fighting Antisemitism”, being organized by the World Holocaust Forum Foundation together with Yad Vashem and the President of the State of Israel.

“Antisemitism continues to exist in a variety of formats and locations around the world and no one seems to be able to prevent its proliferation,” stated Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev. “The leaders gathering at Yad Vashem all share a deep concern with what is happening around the world.”

Over the past weeks, the world has witnessed violent and troubling antisemitic attacks in various countries including France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States. While these incidents do not represent an increase or significant change from recent months, they do represent the ongoing trend of hate crimes targeting Jews across much of the world.

“The ways in which antisemitism has persisted and proliferated since the Holocaust must be identified, studied and understood,” Shalev continued. “We must all be alert to antisemitism’s current manifestations and remain resolute in combatting it where it appears. It is the responsibility of all humanity, and especially the leaders that will gather at Yad Vashem, to work to fight antisemitism, racism and xenophobia.”

Antisemitism and Holocaust distortion and denial seem to go hand in hand. Over the same period of time that we’ve seen an increase in expressions of antisemitism, we’ve also witnessed new nationalistic narratives emerging across much of Europe, in an attempt by authorities to distort or dilute the historical narrative of the Holocaust in their own countries. These phenomena are inherently related. As the Holocaust is called into question, segments of society are allowing themselves to once again revisit age-old antisemitic canards and stereotypes.

Dr. Robert Rozett, Senior Historian at Yad Vashem’s International Institute for Holocaust Research, explained that while antisemitism did not disappear with the end of World War II, it became “less politically correct in many segments of society to have antisemitic opinions out in the open.”
