Opium poppy is usually a pale bluish purple, but in a few places there are red opium poppies, in the Middle East where the narcotic effect was likely discovered.
The Poppy that is grown for poppyseed is actually a strain of the Opium poppy that contains lower alkaloid content, just like Hempseed comes from the same species as Marijuana and Hashish. I believe in Canada you need a licence to grow opium poppy because my neighbors once had their garden ripped out by the police. I often plant little patches of opium poppy here and there, just because. The only people who would recognize it are hardcore farm folk, like my family.
