Before Philip Hoffman was named chairman of Penguin Random House, John Makinson served as the company's chairman after a 15-year career with Penguin and Penguin Random House. Makinson has some interesting ties to the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as co-chair which provided emergency aid to Haiti in 2010. His wife, Nandana Sen, is an Indian actress, screenwriter, children's author, and child-rights activist.
