They wouldn't have to fight for their lives if they were dead.
He wanted to clothe us in His righteousness because he knew we are incapable of being perfect, which is literally the only way to stand before a Holy God. Good luck with that "love" stuff, which is the Law. The Gospel gives us what the Law demands but cannot supply: perfect obedience, legal justification in a court of law where we stand accused and justice must be satisfied.
