Agree with your assessment anon. This makes even less sense. So she was East Bound 78 taking the ramp to North Bound I 15 and lost control. The freight liner wasn't oncoming it was North Bound too and a four runner heading north bound was also involved according to this story.
Fuck. Journalists really need to slow the fuck down and get the story straight. Okay, so it seems possible that a Ranger could veer off of the onramp into the grass/rocks due to rain or maybe distracted driving (texting probs). Depending on which side of the road she veered off of, the Ranger could have gone perpendicular to the direction of northbound travel.
Lets say she veered off the left side of the ramp, the resistance to the wheels (rough ground on left vs smooth pavement on the right) could have put the ranger In a position to come somewhat perpendicular to I15 travel. I remember that ramp as a long, gradual bend with about 500meters of merge lane with slight camber (maybe no camber).
I'm struggling with any scenario where the driver is conscious UNLESS this happened near the end of the ramp where there was no time to slow down or react. Unless there is fuckery with the control surfaces.
-
Long sweeping ramp means a lot of open ground if a vehicle veers off to the left (which she did)
-
If it was a new Ranger traction control would have squared the vehicle up and kept it from spinning (theoretically)

The story you linked makes more sense than the UT that said Ranger hit oncoming traffic
