the earth has natural openings. If large flows of magma or lava or water flood from one place to another it 'gla-glunks' much like when you pour milk from a jug or try and flow oil from a bottle. It's very hard to have an even flow. With a natural process, even more so. The 'echo back' effect is what causes the 'gla-glunking' and so that's how the earth is almost, at times, the equivalent of a very low bass organ.
