The secret message with the dots said HELLO.
The Battleship movie clue was about old guys using old technology successfully in a modern battle even though we have much more advanced technology nowadays.
The fact is, that when you want to hide a coded message in plain sight, old techniques that are almost forgotten, can be more useful than the latest modern crypto.
For instance, Morse Code.
Of course, when you hide a message in plain sight, you have to hide it, and straight morse code is not hiding anything. One way is to use words of one, two and three syllables. One for dot, two for dash and three for a space. This article describes a way successfully used to hide a message in music on the radio.

Jim Watkins has a YouTube channel, where the old guy (grey streaks in the beard) demonstrates various techniques for hiding morse code in a video, with no sophisticated stenography needed. His fountain pen writing shows at least 3 ways that I have figured out. I am certain that his singing also hides morse, and one day I will listen more carefully to his scripture readings.
Anyway, I used a very simple, almost useless coding of ... for a dot and .... for a dash. I'm not suggesting that Trump's use of dots is morse code, but I do think it is useful to think about how tradecraft is being used in the comms. @CodesUcq has a Twitter feed filled with info, mostly about the Cabal's symbol comms.
