Coalition of 91 groups asks for resignation or removal of BLM "Acting" chief

A coalition of 91 groups with ties to public lands sent a letter Monday asking that acting Bureau of Land Management (BLM) head William Pendley immediately resign or face removal from his post.

Pendley, a controversial figure over his past comments opposing federal land ownership, has been widely opposed by conservation, sportsman, public interest and environmental groups, who said “his actions betray BLM’s mission and demonstrate his lack of fitness to lead it.”

The coalition’s letter to Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, who oversees BLM, comes as Pendley’s temporary delegation of power is set to expire on Friday. Interior has been criticized for using temporary orders to fill high-ranking posts with controversial figures who would be unlikely to earn Senate confirmation.

“Pendley holds views that are antithetical to the BLM’s mission to manage public lands and resources on behalf of all Americans,” the groups wrote in the letter, citing not only Pendley's prior comments but also his work as a lawyer for groups fighting the designation of protected areas.

His long history of involvement with such groups was a feature of his 17-page recusal list, which highlighted his work with several counties in Utah fighting to reduce the scale of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.

“Regardless of Pendley’s recusal from any involvement in this litigation, his position at the head of the BLM is a conflict of interest, or at the very least, a public perception of the same that undermines his credibility and authority to direct the Bureau,” the groups wrote.

“The fact that Pendley’s current appointment gives him the power to direct BLM officials to defer to the policy agendas of these counties, which includes maximizing resource extraction and opening lands to motor vehicles that were previously closed to protect wildlife habitat and irreplaceable cultural sites, is deeply troubling.”

Temps are great when used by patriots…

Don't forget, it was the BLM that is poised to move HQ operations out of DC. Good times!

West Virginia corrections staff, cadets fired over photo of Nazi salute

More than 30 West Virginia corrections cadets and staff will be fired over a class photo in which the participants made the classic Nazi salute.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) reviewed and approved the recommended terminations from the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, according to a statement from his office.

“As I said from the beginning, I condemn the photo of Basic Training Class 18 in the strongest possible terms,” Justice said in the statement. “I also said that this act needed to result in real consequences — terminations and dismissals. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated on my watch in any agency of State government.”

The report reviewed by the governor recommended the termination of an academy staff member and four academy instructors, who had knowledge of the photo and salute, and all cadets who participated.

The investigation found the gesture was used in the classroom within the first two or three weeks of training and symbolized a “sign of respect for Byrd,” the class instructor.

Byrd, whose first name is not provided, claimed she was not aware of the implications behind the salute, but other interviews contradicted that, saying she instructed the cadets to make it.

"The investigation disclosed that she encouraged it, reveled in it, and at times reciprocated the gesture," the report said. "Additionally, Byrd appeared to overrule the corrective actions taken by others and assured the cadets the behavior was acceptable."

The photo was reportedly taken multiple times because not everyone participated until Byrd instructed them to do so, and some cadets made a fist instead of the salute in an attempt to appease the instructor. The report recommended that every cadet be terminated because of the “far-reaching and harmful perceptions” of the gesture.

Byrd gave the photo to secretarial staff as part of regular procedure and told them to caption it "Hail Byrd," adding, "That's why they do that because I'm a hard-ass like Hitler."

Three people, two training instructors and one cadet were fired when the photo surfaced earlier this month.
