Portland Commissioner Nick Fish announced Tuesday that he plans to resign in 2020 due to his ongoing battle with stomach cancer.

Fish, 61, was first elected to the Portland City Council in 2008 and his current term expires at the end of 2022. He announced earlier this month that his illness had become more complicated after being diagnosed in 2017 and that he would be taking the rest of December off. He said his resignation will be effective once a successor has been elected.
