Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Calls Joe Biden ‘Dangerous,’ ‘Idiotic Person’ and Warns ‘He Will Take Your Ability to Defend Yourself’

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick called Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden “dangerous” and warned that “he will take your ability to defend yourself” on Monday. Prior to the attack on the West Freeway Church of Christ in northwest Texas over the weekend, which was stopped by armed parishioners and security, Biden attacked Texas Governor Greg Abbott for signing a bill that allowed church-goers to carry weapons when they go to worship.

Speaking to reporters in September, Biden said “dealing with firearms, it is irrational, with all due respect to the governor of Texas, irrational what they are doing,” Biden told reporters on September 2. “On the very day you see a mass shooting … and we’re talking about loosening access to have guns, to be able to take them into places of worship, it’s just absolutely irrational. It’s totally irrational.”

The law went into effect on September 1, and likely prevented more death and carnage on Sunday. One person was injured and one worshipper was killed, as well as the gunman. During his appearance on Fox News on Monday, Patrick warned that Biden — and all Democrats who seek to disarm the public — are dangerous. “Let’s be very clear to the American people that Joe Biden is dangerous,” Mr. Patrick said. “He’s not just an idiotic person who says impossible, absurd things, and he’s not just naive, but he’s dangerous. Americans will have to understand, whether you believe in owning a gun or not owning a gun, that the Democrats are dangerous."

Former Bush speechwriter urges voters to end 'institutional vandalism’ of Trump

Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson published an opinion piece Tuesday slamming President Trump and saying he hoped 2020 would be the year that America recovers from its "nasty infection. Gerson, former President George W. Bush's chief speechwriter, criticized a "weakened" Senate, which will preside over Trump's impeachment trial, as a body of "corporate" leaders who prize "efficiency over tradition."

Trump is awaiting a Senate trial on two articles of impeachment for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, passed by the House of Representatives in December. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she would not send the articles to the Senate until terms established by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are agreed to by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell, Gerson laments, has subverted the Senate in coordination with the president, and his actions have left "a large hole where the framers intended an immovable object."

The military, too, has been upended by Trump's unorthodox approach, Gerson said. "In his cartoonish conception of strength, the commander in chief clearly views members of the armed forces as 'killing machines' who should act without conscience," Gerson, 55, said.

Hours after the essay was published, Trump dispatched 100 Marines to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad after Iranian-backed protesters encircled the building. GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina applauded the move, saying there would be "no Benghazis on [Trump's] watch." Gerson concluded his column with an appeal to American voters, claiming that only "the presidential electorate can prevent four more years of institutional vandalism."

GOP senator predicts Senate will acquit Trump before State of the Union

Sen. Roy Blunt is predicting that President Trump will be found not guilty by the Senate before he gives the State of the Union address on Feb. 4. Speaking with Wake Up Columbia on Missouri radio station KSSZ, the Missouri Republican said House Democrats have had plenty of time to make their case for impeachment and that Trump will have "a chance for his lawyers to explain why he shouldn't be (impeached), and then we'll have that vote and move on." The State of the Union is scheduled for a day after the Iowa caucuses this year, which would mean a quick trial of fewer than four weeks in the Senate.

Republicans control the majority in the Senate, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear that he anticipates a swift vote, stating that both sides have "heard enough." “Have we learned enough after listening to all of this to go on and vote on the two very weak articles of impeachment?” McConnell said after the two articles passed. “Or do we have a show trial in which both sides try to embarrass the other and put on an embarrassing scene, frankly, for the American people?"

Blunt added that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had not fulfilled her promise when the investigation began of a bipartisan impeachment. "Nancy Pelosi said at the very start of the year that if impeachment wasn't bipartisan, it wouldn't work," said Blunt. "And it clearly was not bipartisan in the House, not a single Republican voted for the articles of impeachment, and a couple of Democrats didn't, either." Blunt stated he believes a Senate trial would be "pretty predictable" and would happen "quickly."

Exclusive: Trump list shows 319 'results' and promises kept in three years

One month shy of completing three years in office, President Trump has fulfilled or is making significant progress on most of his 2016 campaign promises, which aides said give him a strong reelection argument to counter his impeachment by a bitterly partisan House last week. The list provided to Secrets is the latest update of initiatives, executive orders, accomplishments, results, and brags with a focus on the improved economy, trade, energy independence, job creation, cuts to illegal immigration, the president’s America First foreign policy, help for veterans, cutting eight regulations for every new one, packing courts with conservatives, and Trump's record of becoming the nation’s most anti-abortion chief executive. It also charted Trump's successes in killing more than a dozen major Obama-era initiatives. Officials said the list would be longer if key agency initiatives were also included, such as the Department of Transportation’s move to boost rural infrastructure and the Interior Department’s expansion of areas open for hikers, hunters, and anglers.
