Interesting article. I've studied Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots rather exhaustively, but have not researched Elizabeth of York. I don't watch television so am not familiar with Game of Thrones, but I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend. :

“I1 and Doggerland”

Posted by Frigewald in Paternal Haplogroup I1

Based on modern Y haplogroup distribution, it appears that I1 was probably the predominant Doggerland paternal gene pool, and that its predominant maternal counterpart was probably H1c. This is not yet confirmed by ancient DNA findings, but it is supported by I1 micro-satellite diversity which is greatest nearer to the Franco-Cantabrian refuge, suggesting I1 origins from that region.

The best explanation from an archaeological perspective is an Epipaleolithic Magdelanian population that survived the last Ice Age in the Franco-Cantabrian refuge and migrated northwards as the climate improved. These tribes then evolved into the Azilian-Meglamosian Mesolithic people of Doggerland.

These mesolithic hunter-gatherers and fisher-folk spoke a pre-IE language, perhaps related to pre-Afroasiatic since I's counterpart haplogroup J is almost entirely represented by Afroasiatic speakers. Traces of their tongue may have survived in a Basque and Keltic sub-stratum that has observed Afroasiatic-like characteristics.

As Doggerland was flooded by rising sea levels, and perhaps finally destroyed by a tsunami in 6200 BCE, these mesolithic people retreated towards the higher grounds of the surrounding region including Norway, Denmark, Holland, England, Northern Germany and France, where I1 now predominates. During the subsequent Neolithic they then mixed with incoming IE-speaking agriculturists.
