Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie thinks some local law enforcement leaders will be willing to go to jail rather than comply with state gun control laws they deem unconstitutional.

"Attended my first 2A sanctuary meeting today in Lewis County (where I live). Standing room only. Friends and neighbors spoke passionately and articulately. County officials unanimously passed a resolution," Massie tweeted on Dec. 30. "This grassroots movement feels even stronger than the Tea Party in 2010."

“Second Amendment sanctuary” municipalities last year sprouted up in Illinois, a state with some of the strictest gun control laws. They then spread to Colorado, Kentucky, New Mexico, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, Washington state, and other states.

Massie cited Weld County, Colorado Sheriff Steve Reams, a critic of the state’s “red flag” law, who has offered to put himself in his own jail rather than enforce the state law.

“His county government has already voted to fund his legal fees should he end up in a protracted legal battle that might go all the way" to the Supreme Court, Massie told the Washington Examiner.

“And so that's one of the things that when you boil it all down and say, ‘What does the sanctuary county movement mean?'” Massie said. “So, what it could mean is that county governments decide to use taxpayer dollars, with the blessing of the taxpayers in those counties, to support the sheriffs in their court battles.”

Massie compared the potential circumstances to the jailing of Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis by a judge when she refused to sign same-sex marriage certificates in 2015.

“A lot of people didn't think she was willing to do this, but she resisted a judge's order to issue marriage licenses with her name on it, and she refused to do it, and he found her in contempt and threw her in jail without a jury trial,” Massie said.

“So, she was basically a political prisoner," Massie said. "She stayed in jail until it became a national issue.”

In Virginia, gun control proposals, including a firearms ban, universal background checks, magazine capacity restrictions, and a rollback to one firearm purchase per month, have surfaced since Democrats won the majority in both legislative chambers, along with Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam. Some rural sheriffs began talking up the "sanctuary county" idea in anticipation of the upcoming legislative session, with Democrats in full control of the state government.

Northam told WTKR earlier last month that any law enforcement officer that did not carry out gun control laws enacted by the state would face “consequences,” but he did not give any specifics.

"If we have constitutional laws on the books and law enforcement officers are not enforcing those laws on the books, then there are going to be consequences, but I'll cross that bridge if and when we get to it," Northam said.

However, Virginia Democratic Rep. Donald McEachin told the Washington Examiner in December Northam always has the option to call up the National Guard or cut off funds to noncompliant municipalities as a way to enforce the law, if necessary.

Fellow Virginia Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly suggested that local police should be prosecuted for not carrying out the laws.

However, Massie, 48, said he believes these threats will not deter local law enforcement that have declared their counties Second Amendment sanctuaries have support from their constituents.

“Somebody is going to jail," Massie said. "And it's probably going to be a public official. And God bless the public officials who are willing to do this so their constituents don't have to.”

Massie, who earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, leads the House Second Amendment Caucus. He attended his first Second Amendment sanctuary county gathering in Lewis County, Kentucky, in his home district on Monday night.

Massie noted there was concern Kentucky's new Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, will issue gun control measures via executive order.

Beshear defeated Republican incumbent Matt Bevin in November. But Massie said he believes Bevin initially won the governorship in 2015, in part because of Davis’s protest.

Similar protests in Virginia could affect lawmakers’ reelection prospects, Massie said.

“These people that are trying to grab the guns could unwittingly put Virginia into play in the next presidential election, because I haven't seen this kind of palpable grassroots energy since 2009, 2010 — the Tea Party," Massie said. "Everybody always went and tried to define who was organizing these Tea Parties in 2009 and 2010, and there were no leaders."

Illinois Joins Ten Other States in Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

Is a national end to pot prohibition right around the corner?

Folks, the legalization of marijuana at the national level is fast approaching, and it would be a silly and futile waste of time to step in front of this economic train as it rolls down the tracks.

No, you don’t have to enjoy using the drug or its derivatives to benefit from its legalization, either. The “side effects” of the end of pot prohibition have been studied in-depth in places like Colorado and Washington State, and the verdict is in: Legal weed reduces opioid dependence, increases tax revenue, and creates an incredible amount of jobs.

Furthermore, with Canada and Mexico having legalized cannabis, this leaves only America ripe for the picking by domestic drug gangs and foreign cartels – something that the people of Chicago, Illinois know all too well.

But a law taking effect on the first day of 2020 may take a bite out of even the most savage of Chiraq’s ganja-slinging squads.

New Year’s Day, Illinois became the 11th state to legalize marijuana, prompting long lines to start forming at dispensaries before sunrise.

Dispensaries were allowed to begin selling cannabis at 6 a.m. but there was a delay in some sales due to a problem with the state database that will track all marijuana sales.

Illinois residents may possess up to 30 grams of the dried flower, five grams of cannabis concentrate and 500 milligrams of THC in edibles, while non-state residents may possess only half as much.

The move will also allow many Illinois residents to reagin their dignity as well.

The first day of legal sales follows Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker granting more than 11,000 pardons to people convicted of low-level marijuana convictions.

“The war on cannabis has destroyed families. It has filled jails and prisons with nonviolent offenders. It has disproportionately affected black and brown communities,” Pritzker said at a press conference Tuesday.

‘Democrats Were Forced To Get In Line On Impeachment’ – Comments begin at 1:22

According to a few Republican lawmakers, the campaign against the president was a sleazy, sleazy process. And the main culprit, they alleged, is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) recalled hearing threats on the Democratic side of the aisle as the votes proceeded.

“It’s not just that Nancy Pelosi raises money for her political caucus, it’s that Nancy Pelosi uses that money as a political weapon against anyone who would potentially vote against impeachment,” Gaetz said. “Andy and I observed active threats on the House floor that if the Blue Dog Democrats did not go along with the radical left of the Democratic Party and support impeachment, that they would not be supported by the DCCC.”

“It’s a huge mistake for the Democrats,” Biggs began. There are people within the Democratic caucus itself that realize they have nothing and it’s done nothing but help President Trump solidify his position with people of reason throughout the country.

“Some of them, I’ve talked to them quietly aside. They want this to go away. They wish it had never happened, but you know what, Nancy Pelosi has raised money for them but the reality is many wish this thing would go away. But it’s not going to go away. It is actually going to blow up even more I’m afraid.”
