Don't know anons, nothing would surprise this anon (only thing anon is sure of is God wins). Been on the Syria situation since the beginning, the early spring of 2011 (the Arab Spring). Followed it closely.

Events unfolded in Syria in late spring 2011. Protesters on the streets. Fighting started. In October 2011 the U.N. got involved. In February 2012 the U.N. tabled a resolution: Assad had to go. Russia vetoed it.

Fast forward to early 2015. ISIS (they were called ISIL back then) was on the march to victory. The only ally the Assad led Syria had fighting ISIL on the ground was Iran. However, it was clear, the government of Syria was going to fall to ISIL.

Then Syria turned to Russia. Explained the dire straits they were in. The sovereignty of Syria was soon to be lost. Syria asked Putin for military help. While negotiating this, before Putin decided to act, to protect the sovereignty of Syria, he asked for one person to come to Moscow to visit him. Major General Soleimani.

Then, on 30 September 2015 the upper parliament of the Russian Federation gave the green light. For the first time ever, Russian military entered a war outside the former Soviet Union.

I know, so many words. But this guy Soleimani, was, at one time, the only ally Syria had. Not saying one way or the other. But anon wouldn't be surprised, either way.
