Hasan Sabbah, prominent Isma‘ili da‘i and founder of the medieval Nizari Isma‘ili state (b. Qum, mid-440s AH/1050s CE, d. Alamut. 518 AH/1124 CE). Little information is available on the early life of Hasan Sabbah, who was referred to as Sayyidna (our master) by his contemporary Nizari lsmailis. The colourful story, according to which Hasan, Nizam al-Mulk, and ‘Umar Khayyam had made a pact when they were classmates in their youth under the same master at Nishapur, should be dismissed as a legend (see Rashid al-Din, pp. 110-12; Kashani, pp. 146-48; Mirkhand [Tehran], IV. pp. 199-204; Bowen, 1931, pp. 771-82). The events of Hasan’s career as the first ruler of Alamut are better documented; these events were recorded in the Sargudhasht-i sayyidna, the first part of which may have been autobiographical. Although this chronicle, which marked the initiation of a Nizari tradition of historiography in Persia during the Alamut period, has not survived, it was used extensively by Juwayni, Rashid al-Din and Abu’l-Qasim Kashani, who are the chief authorities on Hasan’s life and career (see Daftary, 1992, pp. 91-97).

While "Assassins" typically refers to the entire sect, only a group of acolytes known as the fida'i actually engaged in conflict. Lacking their own army, the Nizari relied on these warriors to carry out espionage and assassinations of key enemy figures, and over the course of 300 years they killed two caliphs, and many viziers, sultans, and Crusader leaders.[7]
During the rule of Imam Rukn-ud-Din Khurshah, the Nizari state declined internally, and was eventually destroyed as the Imam surrendered the castles to the invading Mongols. The Mongols destroyed and eliminated their Order. Mentions of Assassins were preserved within European sources – such as the writings of Marco Polo – where they are depicted as trained killers, responsible for the systematic elimination of opposing figures. The word "assassin" has been used ever since to describe a hired or professional killer, leading to the related term "assassination", which denotes any action involving murder of a high-profile target for political reasons.

.In the tenth century Hasan al Sabah’s Assassins, employed hypnotic induction, illusion and ritual to create believers willing to lay down their lives. According to Steven Runciman, recognized authority on the Crusades and Byzantine empire when the Assassins fortress at Almut was overrun, the surviving assassins, those throughout the Mideast, changed their name, staying in business as the Ismailis. The Ismaili are a sect sometimes described as Islamic, but to both Shia and Sunni Muslims they’re heretics. Runciman notes the Assassins worked closely with the Knights Templar, who adopted their tactics and ritual initiatory practices.
Nation states have enormous difficulty finding large numbers of individuals willing to die on command. The groups employing the Assassin’s tactics has 100% loyalty and instant compliance with leaders’ instructions. Many groups and organizations, religious sects, cults and intelligence agencies were able to acquire the technology and learn the tactics.
