The Needle's Eye is that ONE STEP, and the thread that it can pull along behind it, is endless in its volume and its power. This is what the STRIKE of the ROD and RING refers to. It is a beginning, not an ending.
In Anglo-Saxon and Old English, the word ROD or ROOD also meant crucifix, probably because the locals had direct experience of people being tied to a pole as punishment and the idea of a cross piece attached to the pole seemed meaningless to them.
So, the ROD and RING also symbolizes a Crucifix and a Crown, which in the early days was a simple ring of gold that a chief or kind would wear on his head. There was a long tradition of the RULER wearing a crown and carrying a rod or CLUB or SCEPTRE (which was a stone headed club).
