I forgot all about that movie until now, it was a really great film. The billboard for the beach in the movie is actually a mural on a building in Shell Beach, CA that you can see from Hwy 1/101 going from S to N.
But you're right about people not really recalling what a clear natural sky looks like nowdays. I've mentioned the "stripes in the sky" to people who have said they never noticed it before, while there was an actual grid right above us (hadn't dissipated yet very much)!
