US-led coalition members suspend Iraq operations as region submerged in outrage over Iranian general’s killing

Members of the international coalition gathered to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) have suspended operations in Iraq after the targeted assassination of a top Iranian general by the US.

Germany’s Bundeswehr will put on pause all military missions in Iraq, it announced late on Friday night. That includes both operations aimed against IS and training of Kurdish troops. There are around 130 German soldiers deployed in Iraq at the moment, including 27 stationed at the Taji military base 30km (18 miles) north of Baghdad.

The same security lockdown is true for the 70 soldiers from Sweden, who act as advisers to the Iraqi military. “We have to see what happens. We cannot go into details for safety reasons, but we have paused and taken it hour by hour,” explained Swedish military spokesperson Kristina Swaan.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the situation serious for the 140 soldiers the country has in Iraq, but wouldn’t comment on whether it was necessary to bring them home as a precaution.

NATO, which has many of the same members as the anti-IS coalition, has suspended its training operations in Iraq too, spokesman for the alliance Dylan White said. NATO has hundreds of personnel under its aegis in the country.

The anti-IS coalition members initiated a curfew for its troops following the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, by a US airstrike on Friday morning. Tehran pledged retaliation for what it sees as an act of international terrorism.

The killing also led to mass protests in Iran and several other Middle Eastern countries, where the assassinated general was perceived as a hero by many. Soleimani played a crucial role in organizing and supporting Shiite militias to fight against IS in Iraq and Syria. The US claimed the assassination was an act of pre-emptive self-defense.

Haftar-backing Libyan parliament votes to cut ties with Turkey over military deal, accuses PM of treason

The parliament of Libya, which opposes the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, has rejected the ratification of a military agreement with Turkey and voted to cut diplomatic ties with Ankara instead.

The Tripoli-based government of Al-Sarraj struck a military agreement with Turkey, which prompted Ankara to send its troops to Libya. Their aim is to confront Khalifa Haftar, the powerful Libyan military commander based in the eastern port of Tobruk.

The Libyan parliament, which backs Haftar, said on Saturday it refused to ratify the Turkey deal and called for pressing high treason charges against Fayez Al-Sarraj, Al Arabiya reported. The lawmakers said they may refer the situation to the International Court of Justice.

Haftar, who commands the so-called Libyan National Army, earlier declared mobilization to fight against Turkish troops, calling their looming deployment an invasion.

Libya, once one of the most prosperous nations in Africa, remains fractured and devastated since the 2011 NATO bombing campaign that helped militant forces oust and kill long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. After the war, the country became a playground for various competing militias, as well as a major human trafficking thoroughfare.

‘We’re becoming the terror’: Virginia senator hated by ISIS calls Soleimani killing ‘tragedy,’ warns against war with Iran

General Qassem Soleimani was among those responsible for defeating Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, and his killing is a “great tragedy” that could result in a “vast war” with Iran, a former Virginia senator and Marine veteran told RT.

Soleimani was killed on Thursday in a strike outside Baghdad International Airport, for which the White House admitted responsibility later that evening. In a statement to RT on Friday, retired Virginia Senator Richard Black said the assassination “may presage a new war of aggression—this time, against the Iranian people.”

Black noted that the commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force had led the fight against both Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and Al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria.

We are not genuinely fighting a war on terror. I fear that in a sense, we are becoming the terror.

The former senator, who retired at the end of 2019, cautioned against further escalation in the Middle East, recalling a claim predating the 2003 invasion of Iraq that regime change in Tehran was the ultimate objective.

“I pray that we draw back from the vast war that looms,” Black added. “Neither our soldiers nor our people have a voice to stop it.”

Having served in the US Marines during the Vietnam War, Black became an outspoken critic of US involvement in Syria during his last term in the Virginia Senate. In 2014, he thanked Syrian President Bashar Assad for saving Christians and Jews from Al-Qaeda and IS. The following year, IS dubbed him an “American Crusader” and put him on its enemies list.

4 Officers Arrested After Video Leaked of Them Beating Man So Badly His Face Was Disfigured

Clermont, FL — According to the officers involved, the savage beating of Otis Miller never took place. His mangled face and unconscious body found lying on the floor in a jail shower were a mystery according to the officers and this would be their story until a leaked video caught them all in a lie. Now, four officers have been arrested and charged with felonies for the horrific beating and subsequent cover up.

In July, a video was uploaded to YouTube by an anonymous source which showed a group of officers at the Lake Correctional Institution near Clermont viciously beating Miller—for nearly five minutes. The video was secretly taken by an inmate and was the only evidence of the crime. Had it not been published to YouTube, the four officers who nearly killed Miller would’ve gotten off Scot free.

“This video is deeply disturbing. We have zero tolerance for officer abuse or misconduct for any reason,” Mark Inch, the newly appointed secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections said after the video was posted to YouTube in July. “The actions of these individuals will not be tolerated. Our Office of Inspector General has launched an immediate investigation.”

In July, Inch said the officers who beat Miller “have been taken out of contact with inmates and will not be allowed to return to full duty until a thorough investigation has been completed. Those found participating in any level of abuse or failing to properly report abuse will be subject to administrative and criminal charges.”

Fast forward to now and all the officers have been charged.

As the video shows, the inmates filming thought the officers were going to kill Miller.

“As y’all can see, they’re beating him up. For what reason, I don’t know,” one said. “They’re steady beatin’ him. They are gonna kill him.”

During the investigation, the nurse who witnessed the aftermath described how the officers were celebrating the beating by exchanging high-fives and bragging about kicking and punching Miller.

Miller’s sister would be the one to expose the beating. She went to the authorities with the video and showed them what took place.

“I contacted Tallahassee. Me and my brothers wrote letters for them to do an investigation,” Miller’s sister, Shantel Grace said. “When I showed up, I caught them off guard because they wanted to know how did I know that since he was in confinement.”

For several minutes, officers took turns punching and kicking Miller who does not appear to be fighting back. In fact, he would later fall unconscious. After the investigation was complete, a new video, taken by the prison, was released showing the aftermath of the beating. It is hard to watch.

“If You Are Wondering Who Benefits”: Weapons Makers Stocks Surge as US Risks War With Iran

Almost immediately after the United States assassinated Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike Thursday night, major American weapons manufacturers and defense contractors—from Northrop Grumman to Lockheed Martin to Raytheon—saw their stocks surge as investors sensed the growing likelihood of another costly and deadly war in the Middle East.

As the Los Angeles Times reported, “Even as the broader Standard and Poor’s 500 index lost ground, the S&P Aerospace & Defense Select Industry index climbed 1.8% on Friday.”

According to the Times:

Northrop Grumman Corp. stock jumped 5.4%. Based in Falls Church, Va., Northrop Grumman makes such aircraft as the B-2 bomber and the upcoming B-21 bomber and is the sole bidder to build the next generation of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

AeroVironment Inc. advanced 6.9%. The Simi Valley company makes small, short-range reconnaissance drones that U.S. soldiers use. The increase in troop deployment to the Middle East could mean more business for AeroVironment, said Ken Herbert, managing director with investment banking and financial services firm Canaccord Genuity.

Shares of Lockheed Martin Corp., which makes the F-35 fighter jet, climbed 3.6%. Missile and radar technologies maker Raytheon Co.’s stock rose 1.5%.

The surge in defense stocks was readily highlighted on corporate television programs like Fox Business and in publications like Investor’s Business Daily, which noted that “Northrop Grumman (NOC) and Lockheed Martin (LMT) were big winners in Friday’s stock market trading, along with Raytheon stock.”

Citigroup analyst Jonathan Raviv wrote Friday that “if Middle East conflict were to ratchet up…we think it could be tougher for Democratic Party electoral candidates to argue against a stronger defense budget in 2020.”

“As is always the unfortunate case, defense stocks tend to benefit from perceptions of heightened risk and the potential for geopolitical conflict,” Raviv added.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who along with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) unveiled legislation to stop Pentagon funding for U.S. military action against Iran, tweeted late Friday that “if you are wondering who benefits from endless wars, take a look at how stocks for weapons manufacturers began to rise as soon as Soleimani was killed.”

“Defense contractors spent $84 million lobbying Congress last year,” Khanna noted, “and it certainly wasn’t to promote diplomacy and restraint.”

Israel “Given Advance Notice Of U.S. Plan to Kill Iranian Gen. Soleimani,” U.S. Congress Left In The Dark

The Trump administration reportedly gave Israel advance notice of US plans to assassinate Iranian General Qassem Soleimani but did not consult with our own Congress before the attack.

Is this America First or Israel First?

From the LA Times, “Israel had advance notice of U.S. plan to kill Iranian general Suleimani, report says”:

Israel had advance notice of the U.S. plan to kill Iranian military leader Gen. Qassem Suleimani, Israeli military and diplomatic analysts reported Friday night while refraining from providing further details due to heavy military censorship.

“Our assessment is that the United States informed Israel about this operation in Iraq, apparently a few days ago,” Barak Ravid, a journalist and commentator with deep sources in the Israeli security establishment, said on Channel 13.

An Israeli army officer with knowledge of Israeli military assessments, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not have permission to speak to reporters, told the Los Angeles Times that the attack on Suleimani “did not come as a surprise.”

It was reported at the start of January 2018 that the US gave Israel the green light to assassinate Qassem Soleimani — but of course it fell on America!

Ten Chinese Migrants Apprehended in Arizona After Vehicle Pursuit near Border

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended ten Chinese migrants following a police pursuit when the Mexican cartel-connected human smuggler refused to stop. Additional migrants escaped over an unsecured section of the border into Mexico.

Welton Station Border Patrol agents received a sensor activation notice indicating possible human or drug smuggling activity on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. Agents responded to the area came upon a white Ford F-250 truck traveling northbound from the border area, according to comments made by Welton Station Patrol Agent in Charge Kevin Villegas in a video tweeted set by Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Porvaznik.

When the driver of the truck loaded with migrants saw the Border Patrol agents, he turned and fled back toward the Mexican border, Villegas stated in the video.

“Agents pursued the vehicle southbound until it ultimately stopped at the international boundary,” he explained. “Agents witnessed at least 12 people exit the vehicle and run south of the fence. Ten additional people were discovered inside the toolboxes of the truck.”

The agent said they identified the ten apprehended migrants as Chinese nationals who entered the U.S. illegally. The agents on the scene arrested the migrants and transported them to the Welton Station where they were processed under CBP guidelines.

Villegas said the vehicle crossed the outdated section of the border barrier by driving over the vehicle barrier by utilizing an improvised ramp. Agents seized the truck.

“It was determined that the vehicle illegally entered the U.S. by simply ramping over existing vehicle boundaries,” the station chief stated, “further stressing the need for updated wall systems.”

Yuma Sector Border Patrol officials stated this is the second time in the past 30 days that agents observed a vehicle incursion from Mexico into the U.S.

In early December, Yuma Sector agents encountered two vehicles traveling north from the international boundary, Yuma Sector officials reported. When the drivers saw the agents, they turned around and fled toward the border. Agents stopped one of the vehicles and seized 1,500 pounds of marijuana. The second vehicle fled back into Mexico through an unsecured section of the border. Both vehicles entered the U.S. illegally by crossing through this unsecured area.

“My agents do an outstanding job patrolling our Area of Responsibility and keeping our local communities safe,” said Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony J. Porvaznik. “Incidents like this highlight the need for a wall system along all of our sector’s 126 miles of border to ensure we stay one step ahead of the transnational criminal organizations who are constantly adapting their tactics to avoid apprehension.”
