Fresh Cambridge Analytica leak ‘shows global manipulation is out of control’
An explosive leak of tens of thousands of documents from the defunct data firm Cambridge Analytica is set to expose the inner workings of the company that collapsed after the Observer revealed it had misappropriated 87 million Facebook profiles.
More than 100,000 documents relating to work in 68 countries that will lay bare the global infrastructure of an operation used to manipulate voters on “an industrial scale” is set to be released over the next months.
It comes as Christopher Steele, the ex-head of MI6’s Russia desk and the intelligence expert behind the so-called “Steele dossier” into Trump’s relationship with Russia, said that while the company had closed down, the failure to properly punish bad actors meant that the prospects for manipulation of the US election this year were even worse.
The release of documents began on New Year’s Day on an anonymous Twitter account, @HindsightFiles, with links to material on elections in Malaysia, Kenya and Brazil. The documents were revealed to have come from Brittany Kaiser, an ex-Cambridge Analytica employee turned whistleblower, and to be the same ones subpoeaned by Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Kaiser, who starred in the Oscar-shortlisted Netflix documentary The Great Hack, decided to go public after last month’s election in Britain. “It’s so abundantly clear our electoral systems are wide open to abuse,” she said. “I’m very fearful about what is going to happen in the US election later this year, and I think one of the few ways of protecting ourselves is to get as much information out there as possible.”

Iran Is Not Our Enemy, Let's Make This Israel's Last Attempt to Start a War
Most Americans did not know Qasem Soleimani until the Israelis found the perfect opportunity to have him assassinated. They gave the Pentagon the orders and kindly handed Donald Trump all the credit while he ate his ice cream and watched it on TV.
So far, Trump's post-hoc rational for murdering the most important military official in Iran is that the protesters who want America out of Iraq after 17 years of occupation did some minor structural damage to the US embassy in Baghdad. The man who was elected in part specifically to keep us out of foreign wars tried to stifle the outcry by posting a low-res image of the American flag for Kanye West and Morton Klein to cyber-salute. So far, only paid minions are cheering this escalation.
Some of the Democrats are tepidly complaining about a technicality, that the decision to kill Soleimani was made without congressional authorization, but they are merely reading a script written for our fantasy democracy. Most of the Democrats voted in favor of the $738 billion dollar military budget, as well as to strip a provision that would've specifically banned a unilateral war with Iran. They were in on it.
Adam Schiff claims he has mixed feelings about the hit, but there will be no House hearings or impeachment proceedings over the president doing drone drive-bys in a supposedly sovereign nation against representatives of foreign countries we're not at war with.

Mossad Chief Bragged About Possibility of Assassinating Soleimani Just Months Before His Death
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised President Trump’s decision to kill the top Revolutionary Guards Quds Force commander on Friday, saying Tel Aviv stands alongside Washington in its “just struggle” against Iran.
Mossad Director Yossi Cohen bragged that his agency could easily target Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani for elimination, telling an Israeli magazine in October that Soleimani knew “that his elimination is not impossible.”
According to Cohen, the reason Soleimani had not yet been targeted was because he had “not yet made a mistake which put him in the list of Mossad’s liquidators.”
The Mossad chief did not specify what sort of “mistake” this would have to be, but did say that the Quds Force commander’s actions were “identified and felt everywhere,” and that “there’s no doubt that the infrastructure he built presents a serious challenge to Israel.”
Prior to his death on Friday, Soleimani had been the target of multiple assassination plots. In October 2019, Iranian authorities reported having thwarting a “joint Israeli-Arab” plot to plant a giant bomb under a congregation hall at an event Soleimani was supposed to attend in September.
Before that, Soleimani revealed in an interview that he and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah barely escaped an Israeli drone attack during the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon.
Prior to Soleimani’s death on Friday, Israel repeatedly accused him of orchestrating an effort to wage proxy wars against Tel Aviv using groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, and of building up a military presence in Syria as a jumping off point for possible future attacks on Israel. These concerns have prompted the Israeli military to repeatedly target suspected ‘Iran-allied’ forces across the region, from Gaza and Lebanon to Syria and Iraq.

Vice President Mike Pence incorrectly linked Iran to the 9/11 terror attacks in a series of tweets on Friday.
Pence was tweeting about the US military’s assassination of a top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, the day prior.
The official government report on the events leading up to the attacks, known as the 9/11 Commission report, undermines Pence.
The report states there is “no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack.” Other reports have reached similar conclusions.

The US killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad on Thursday, under the direct orders of President Donald Trump.
As the Trump administration defended the assassination on Friday, the vice president in a tweet said that Soleimani had assisted “in the clandestine travel to Afghanistan of 10 of the 12 terrorists who carried out the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.”
But the official government report on the events leading up to the attacks, known as the 9/11 Commission report, undermines Pence.
The report states there is “no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack.”
The report does say “there is strong evidence that Iran facilitated the transit of al Qaeda members into and out of Afghanistan before 9/11, and that some of these were future 9/11 hijackers.” But it does not say Soleimani was involved in that regard.
There were 19 hijackers on 9/11 – 15 from Saudi Arabia, one from Egypt, one from Lebanon, and two from the United Arab Emirates.
The Trump administration has repeatedly sought to present links between Iran and al Qaeda, the terror group responsible for the 9/11 attacks. This has raised concerns among congressional lawmakers that the Trump administration might attempt to invoke the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to launch a war against Iran.
The AUMF, which is still in effect, is a law that passed in the days following the 9/11 attacks and authorised the president “to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organisations, or persons he determines planned, authorised, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organisations or persons.”

Mysterious Airstrikes Target PMU Camp Near Iraqi-Syrian Border
Mysteries airstrikes targeted late on January 4 a camp of the Popular Mobilization Unit (PMU) near the Iraqi-Syrian border, the al-Hurra Iraq TV reported, citing security sources.
The U.S.-based news channel didn’t provide any details on the matter. However, other sources claimed that airstrikes killed at least five personnel of the PMU.
Al-Hurra’s report was confirmed by the al-Mayadeen TV, which said that the targeted camp is located within Syria’s territory.
The airstrikes coincided with rocket attacks on the Iraqi capital, Baghdadi, and its outskirt. The attacks targeted the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone as well as the Balad Air Base, north of the capital.
Last month, the U.S. responded to a rocket attack, that killed a contractor working for the Pentagon, by carrying out a series of airstrikes on PMU positions along the Iraqi-Syrian border. More than 25 fighters were killed as a result.
Iraq witnessed another escalation this week, when new U.S. airstrikes claimed the lives of PMU Deputy Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani.
The PMU and Iran vowed to retaliate to the U.S. attacks. On the other side, senior officials in Washington warned that any new attack in Iraq will be met with a military response.

Never before have the basics of primary, secondary, and collegiate education been more important in guarding against the whimsical fantasies and alternate realities of politicians like Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Narendra Modi, Boris Johnson, and others in their mold.
One of the most ridiculous contentions of the extreme right is that Adolf Hitler and his National Socialists, or Nazis, were left-wingers. These confabulators of history would have the world believe that Hitler and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were engaged in a war between leftist leaders and that Italy’s Benito Mussolini and Imperial Japan’s Hideki Tojo were mere leftist allies of Hitler.
In April 2019, after having paid a visit to Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem, Brazil’s off-kilter President Bolsonaro confidently declared “there is no doubt” that Nazism was a leftist movement. Bolsonaro is not the only Brazilian leader to utter such inaccuracies about history. Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo is also on record as stating that Nazis represented a leftist political viewpoint. Both Bolsonaro and Araujo assume that because the word “socialist” was contained in the official title of the Nazi Party in Germany – the “National Socialist German Workers’ Party” – that means the Nazis were leftwing socialists.
Using the “logic” of Bolsonaro’s and Araujo’s political party, the Social Liberal Party (PSL) of Brazil, one should believe that the party consists of socialist-inclined liberals. In fact, that PSL is a neo-fascist party championed by Bolsonaro, someone who said the following about Hitler: “He was a great strategist: annihilated his enemies as everyone does when at war; I would have enlisted in Hitler’s army.” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro understood what Bolsonaro represents when, during his state of the nation speech in Caracas in January 2019, said, “Over there we’ve got Brazil in the hands of a fascist – Bolsonaro is a Hitler of the modern era!”
Bolsonaro and Araujo are unfazed by the fact that Nazis and their allies in Europe and Asia were committed fascists who were intent on stamping out socialism and communism around the world. They and their fascist ilk in Brazil, the United States, and elsewhere are ignorant of the basics of history and political science. In the United States, far-right pundits like Dinesh D’Souza – fully pardoned by Trump in 2018 for his previous criminal conviction for campaign finance law violations – and Jonah Goldberg, have erroneously argued that Nazis were leftists. Bolsonaro, a champion of the fascist and murderous military dictatorship that ruled Brazil with an iron fist between 1964 and 1985, was not a dictatorship. In Bolsonaro’s warped mind, as well as those of his supporters, up is down, Nazis were and remain leftists, and military dictatorships are democracies.

NRA Promises ‘Strong Presence’ to Block Virginia Gun Bans
The National Rifle Association said Thursday it will work with gun owners to swamp the first hearing of the Virginia Senate committee considering new gun bans in an effort to beat back the gun-control proposals from Governor Ralph Northam (D.).
NRA spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen told the Washington Free Beacon that the gun-rights group is mobilizing its members to appear at the first meeting of the Virginia Senate's Courts of Justice on Jan. 13. The organization hopes that pressure from constituents will make newly elected Democrats, who helped the party capture control of the state legislature, think twice about supporting gun bans pursued by the state's Democratic governor. Those new Democrats, who were silent on gun bans during the election, hold the key to how far the two-vote Democratic majority in the state Senate and the five-vote majority in the House of Delegates go with new gun laws.
If gun-rights supporters can convince just a handful of Democrats to oppose a new gun-control measure, it will not become law. Mortensen said the Courts of Justice committee is the first stop for those new gun-control proposals, and gun owners in the state need to show their opposition to those bills face-to-face.
"That's the first committee of jurisdiction on all the Northam gun control," Mortensen told the Free Beacon. "We want to make sure that our members and supporters are in Richmond at that committee hearing on that day so that their voices are heard. It's critical that our members are there early in the session to make the biggest impact in order to stop these gun bills from moving forward."
The lobbying effort will be the culmination of early-stage efforts by the gun-rights group to motivate its supporters in Virginia. The NRA will hold town halls throughout the state this weekend and is sending representatives to the Richmond gun show, which is held on Saturday and Sunday. It will also hold a press conference with supportive legislators Jan. 13. Mortensen said the lobbying effort is part of a strategy to resist gun-control bills from the earliest possible point until the legislature adjourns in March.

Australian Police Say Arsonists & Lightning To Blame For Bushfires, Not Climate-Change
Authorities in Australia are working on the premise that arsonists and lightning strikes are to blame for bushfires that have devastated numerous areas of the country, not “climate change” as many global warming alarmists have claimed.
Since November, the fires have struck various regions of the state of New South Wales, destroying thousands of buildings and killing at least 22 people.
Despite the fact that bushfires are not uncommon in Australia, the severity of the damage led numerous climate change alarmists to blame the disaster on man-made global warming.
Earlier this week, Bernie Sanders blamed those who were “delaying action on climate change” for “the blood-red sky and unbreathable air in Australia because of raging forest fires.”
However, according to those tasked with investigating the fires, climate change has nothing to do with it.
