State police bust suspected members of Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Brockton
Four suspected members of a motorcycle club and one suspected associate were arrested on gun charges Friday while they were in state attending a local member’s funeral, State police said.
The alleged members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club were all arrested in the area of the Motel 6 on Westgate Drive in Brockton after police seized six illegally carried firearms and a small amount of crystal meth.
Matthew Miles, 41, of McMinniville, Tenn., Pedro Tapia, 51, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Matthew Ballingham, 43, of Waterbury, Conn., Edward Mahon, 61, of Cornwall, Vt., and Margaret Cahill, 29, of Westmont, Illinois, are expected to appear in Brockton District Court next week.
The defendants face a number of combined gun charges, including unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of a large capacity feeding device.
Miles was also charged with possession of a Class A substance.
According to State police, at 2 p.m. troopers approached and spoke to Miles at the hotel, with reason to suspect he was a member of the motorcycle club. Miles acknowledged that he was carrying a pistol and troopers arrested him after determining he did not have an active license to carry in Massachusetts or Tennessee.
Troopers then discovered that Tapia was in a room at the motel, along with another firearm belonging to Miles. They entered and secured the room pending receipt of a search warrant, at which point they saw a .45-caliber handgun in plain view on a nightstand, State police said. After determining that Tapia only had a license to carry in Tennessee, he was placed under arrest.
State police said troopers subsequently saw Ballingham arrive at the hotel and while speaking with him determined he was a Connecticut club member and that he was carrying a loaded 9-mm handgun with a high-capacity magazine. After determining that he was not licensed to carry, police placed Ballingham into custody.
Shortly before 8 p.m., troopers stopped two vehicles near the motel and found both were occupied by suspected club members and associates. State police said they located a .38-caliber handgun in the first vehicle and a .40-caliber handgun and a 9-mm handgun in the second.
Following a brief investigation, Mahon, the suspected club member, and Cahill, a suspected club associate, were arrested.
Police also searched the motel room and seized approximately four grams of crystal meth, as well as a .45-caliber handgun, a knife, a box of ammunition and a loaded magazine.
