6 rockets hit Baghdad’s Green Zone not far from US embassy, nearby areas

The Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone housing foreign embassies, including the American one, has been targeted in a rocket attack which saw three projectiles landing in the area and another three in a nearby district.

Six ‘Katyusha’ unguided rockets struck central Baghdad, the Iraqi military confirmed in a statement. Three of them fell in the Green Zone, not far from the US embassy. Three more hit the neighboring district of Jadriya. There have been no reports of any casualties or damage resulting from the attack.

It is the second such incident targeting the Green Zone in just a few days since a top Iranian commander was killed on orders from Washington.

On Saturday, at least two rockets also hit the area not far from the American diplomatic mission. Mortar shells also landed in a nearby city district injuring five people at that time.

A military base located north of Baghdad and hosting some US forces was also targeted in a separate rocket attack on Saturday, but there were no casualties.

The incidents come after Major General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike alongside a deputy commander of an Iraqi Shia militia and a dozen other people. The strike sent shockwaves across both Iran and Iraq where thousands of people took to the streets to mourn the dead and condemn Washington’s actions.

Tehran branded the general’s assassination “an act of terrorism” and vowed revenge. Iraqi Shia militia Kataib Hezbollah issued a warning to local security forces on Saturday, implying more attacks are coming. It specifically said that people should stay away from US bases starting Sunday evening but stopped short of actually taking responsibility for the rocket attacks.

One US service member, two contractors killed in Al-Shabaab attack in Kenya, two DoD personnel injured

The US military's Africa Command has confirmed that one serviceman and two contractors were killed on Sunday when the jihadist militant group Al-Shabaab attacked a military base in Kenya.

The injured are in a stable condition and are being evacuated at the moment, the statement said.

Camp Simba, which hosts US and local troops, came under attack on Sunday morning. The naval base is located in Manda Bay in Lamu County on Kenya’s coast, bordering Somalia.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of our teammates who lost their lives today,” US Army General Stephen Townsend said in the statement.

The general promised to “pursue those responsible” for the attack and prevent Al-Shabaab jihadists from creating a “safe haven” in Africa.

The attack on the military base included “indirect and small arms fire.” Though the jihadists made it through the perimeter, they were repelled by forces within the base. Six contractor aircraft vehicles were damaged “to some degree” in the attack.

First US troops from Fort Bragg deploy to Middle East amid tensions with Iran: video

Hundreds of US troops were deployed from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on Saturday, to reinforce the US military presence in the Middle East amid fears of escalation, following the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Footage filmed on Saturday by the US military, shows troops loading cargo planes and lining up to board a plane with their rifles.

At least 750 additional soldiers were deployed to the region, with around 3,000 more prepared for possible deployment in the next days.

Army units target terrorists’ positions in surroundings of Maaret al-Numan

Idleb, SANA – Syrian Arab Army units operating in the southern countryside of Idleb on Sunday carried out concentrated strikes targeting terrorists’ positions, movements, and supply lines in Maaret al-Numan area.

SANA’s reporter said the army’s operations during the last few hours targeted terrorist groups’ positions at the outskirts of Maaret al-Numan city and the villages of al-Deir al-Sharqi and Maarshemarin, in addition to targeting terrorists’ supply lines at the outskirts of Maasaran town in the area between Maaret al-Numan and Saraqeb.

The reporter said the army’s operations eliminated a number of terrorists and destroyed their weapons and equipment.
