I like Dinesh and think Jimmy Carter has a special place in hell but this isn't accurate. Iran has always been most directly a UK proxy and under cult control. They instituted a modernized Islamic culture but due to it coming with broader rights it enabled them to more effectively protest and ultimately kill the UK's agent the Shah. The UK/cult chose a different route after the Shah's death and instituted a hardliner to rule the country with a much tighter grip. He rules to this day.
