You don't have to repeat a formula in order to talk to God. You can just talk to Him and express your love, amazement at the wonder of His creation, thanks and appreciation for what you have received. You can tell him what's on your mind – things that trouble you, things that please you, things that are puzzling. You can pray for more faith. You can pray for more wisdom. You can ask Him to make you aware of His presence.
Don't expect any kind of audible answer or a 2-way conversation. You talk to God in pray, and everything God does in this world is His communication to you.
Just try it. Don't have expectations.
Sometimes I think certain denominations kind of mess people up by telling them they can get good with God by praying in a formulaic repetitive way, and holding up examples of people who supposedly heard back from God.
Try just being with Him. No force, no hopes, no expectations.
