Vpn is good if you want to bypass ip based censorship.

It does nothing other than to mask your ip via encripted ssh communication between you and the vpn server.

The problems are:

  1. Many vpns are probably honepots.

  1. Concealing your ip is not enough, identidication can be donebased on the footprints you leave (metadata).

  1. The nsa and others can simply use downstream methods (get the ip conversion data bases straight from the vpn providers or the isp. By getting the data from the isp and the keys from the 3rd party certificate authority (let this sink in, Google is one such authority…), they can see that your original ip communicated with a vpn provider (before the encryption with the vpn server took place).

  1. Agencies can "big data" analyze meta data and create profiles based on online patterns and behavior, even withoutknowing the ip.

Most importantly it will allow them to know that you tend to communicate with a vpn provider website, thus raising a red flag above your head. It makes you a target, since potential vpn users are either dissidents who want to bypass cencorship, terrorists, criminals, or whistleblowers.
