>chernobyl

The name of the city of Chernobyl comes from the name of the grass better known as wormwood. Earlier, wormwood was called a “chernobylnik”. The stalk of the plant, or byl, is black. Hence the name – Chernobyl.

Wormwood is mentioned only once in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation (ch. 8, vv. 10-11). "The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water—the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter."
