Gate is often used as the term for a portal into an after life or perhaps a higher consciousness. The Bible describes 12 gates in New Jerusalem.

Since the adversary likes to mimic and pervert all things Holy, maybe their system also describes gates. Esoteric weird link below (I like to steer clear of all things occult as much as I can so won't dig too much into this) talks about two gates (Gold and Silver, maybe indicative of the two paths?) and guaranteed there is more gates in ancient mysteries informing their world view.
