Saudi king’s personal bodyguard dies of gunshot wound in Jeddah

Riyadh (IraqiNews.com) – Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud’s personal bodyguard General Abdulaziz al-Faghm died of a gunshot wound following a personal dispute with a friend in Jeddah, according to Saudi media reports.

 

A Mecca police spokesman confirmed his death, saying it was due to a gunshot wound after he was shot at by his friend. Five Saudi security officers were injured, the source told Al Arabiya TV channel.

 

Faghm had also served as the personal bodyguard of late King Abdullah.

 

Faghm’s family mourned his death in the early hours of Sunday, and Saudi Twitter was filled with reactions to the news of his death in Jeddah, making his name in Arabic the number one worldwide trend on the social media platform.

 

“God bless my uncle, General Abdulaziz Baddah al-Faghm, after he was killed in his friend’s house by a third friend (treacherously),” Baddah al-Faghm tweeted.

 

“May you rest in peace, hero … I have seen nothing but good and loyalty from you for ten years … I can’t comprehend that I won’t be seeing you anymore,” Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority Turki al-Alsheikh tweeted.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on January 6, the press service of the head of state has reported.

 

"The interlocutors discussed the situation in the Middle East, and the Secretary appreciated Ukraine’s condemnation of the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Secretary Pompeo reiterated the strong U.S. support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and underscored our long-term strategic partnership," the report says.

 

Zelensky informed Pompeo in detail about the results of the agreements reached during the Normandy format meeting, as well as the plans of the Ukrainian government to restore peace in eastern Ukraine. Pompeo welcomed the release of prisoners and the conclusion of an important contract for the transit of gas to Europe.

 

The president thanked the United States for its continued support for the restoration of peace in Donbas and the return of Crimea. Zelensky also expressed special gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump and the Congress for the decision to provide financial assistance to the security and defense sector of our state.

 

The sides agreed that these and other issues would be discussed in detail during a meeting between President Zelensky and Secretary Pompeo.

 

In addition, the parties exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the Christmas holidays.

 

As reported, Pompeo postponed his visit to Ukraine after an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq on December 31. He was expected to arrive in Kyiv on January 3.

Newly appointed Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Volodymyr Yelchenko has presented his credentials to U.S. President Donald Trump.

 

"Presented my credentials from ⁦Volodymyr Zelensky to ⁦Donald Trump⁩ today. Honored to represent Ukraine in the United States which always stood firmly in support of our independence. Ukrainians will never forget this. Our strategic partnership to be enhanced for benefit of both nations," Yelchenko wrote on Twitter on January 6.

 

As reported, Zelensky appointed Yelchenko Ukraine's ambassador to the United States on December 18, 2019.

 

Earlier, the president dismissed Yelchenko from his post of permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations and ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Jamaica.

On January 6-7, considerable avalanche danger is expected in Ukraine’s Carpathian mountains.

 

The State Emergency Service reported this with reference to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center's forecasts.

 

“On January 6-7, considerable (3) level of avalanche risk is expected in the mountainous areas of Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia regions,” the report says.
