After the Second World War, Canada became a haven for Ukrainians who collaborated with the Nazis and killed their own citizens to serve Nazi aims. Once in Canada and with the help of the Canadian state, these war criminals built reactionary domestic organizations (e.g. the UCC) which persist to this day. These organizations displaced already-established progressive Ukrainian organizations. Some collaborators achieved high positions, for example, Waffen SS member Petro Savaryn served as VP of the national PC Party and was Chancellor of the University of Alberta for four years.”
In September 1666, the self-proclaimed Messiah Sabbatai Sevi (or Shabbtai Tsvi), a forty-year-old Jew from Izmir, was brought from prison to Sultan Mehmet IV’s palace in Edirne for a long period of interrogation. Since 1648, when he uttered the Tetragrammaton – the ineffable name of God – in public, his own name had been either extolled or cursed by Jewish communities the world over. A committee of the divan’s judges, which included Muslim and Jewish theologians, the Sultan’s physicians and a few other wise men, wished to investigate Sabbatai’s life story, his behaviour and beliefs, in order to establish the veracity of his messianic claims. Confronted with a choice of death by the Sultan’s archer, who was to challenge the impenetrability of the Messiah’s flesh, or conversion to Islam, Sabbatai chose the latter. Immediately after the conversion he was granted an honorary title as one of the symbolic Chief Gatekeepers of the Palace and settled with a very decent lifelong salary. After a while, though, he started once more to visit the synagogues of Istanbul, to sing psalms, drink wine and “cavort” with women. He was again denounced by his detractors and died in 1676, exiled to the remote fortress town of Dulcigno (or Ulcinj), on the border between Montenegro and Albania.
