11 Indians charged for promoting ‘Islamic rule through jihad' via ‘terrorism classes’ set up in India & UAE

An Indian counter-terrorism unit has named 11 suspects it says were involved in organizing religious courses which called for “jihad” to establish “Islamic rule” in India, carrying out a wave of arrests in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The suspects “conspired and conducted religious classes with the objective of establishing Islamic rule in India, through violent jihad and promoting unlawful activities,” India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The accused were charged with criminal conspiracy for their role in the religious courses, and most have already been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation, the agency added.

Two Afghan pilots killed in military helicopter crash

Two Afghan Air Force pilots have been killed after their helicopter crashed in the western province of Farah, the Defense Ministry says.

The helicopter and its crew were delivering supplies to Afghan security forces when it crashed early on January 8 due to a technical fault, the ministry said in a statement.

In a separate incident, the Defense Ministry said a helicopter made an emergency landing in the eastern province of Paktia, also as a result of a technical fault.

The ministry said nobody was hurt in the incident, but Reuters news agency quoted a local police spokesman as saying that 10 people, including himself, were injured.
