Reactor shutdown threatens world’s medical-isotope supply

Canada’s Chalk River reactor, which makes large amounts of technetium-99m, will end production next month.

Did this help RBG?

https://www.nature.com/news/reactor-shutdown-threatens-world-s-medical-isotope-supply-1.20577#/correction1

One of the most common medical uses for technetium-99m is single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) , which can be used to monitor blood flow in the heart and brain and scan bones for tumours

In the meantime, facilities in Australia, South Africa and Europe are planning expansions next year that could make up most of the shortfall from the Chalk River closure. The European sites are also preparing to convert their reactors to use low-enriched uranium (LEU), which is thought to be less valuable to terrorists. Australia, which already uses LEU targets, is building a new facility to process molybdenum-99. Delays in any of these projects would increase the risk of shortages.

Souped-up cyclotrons offer isotope remedy

Nicola Jones

A Canadian-led team says that it has succeeded in proving the feasibility of using particle accelerators instead of nuclear reactors to produce a badly needed medical isotope. If health regulators approve the method, it will place supplies of the crucial material on a far more secure footing.

But many countries at the meeting, held every 5 years, are calling for action on an underappreciated but pressing risk: getting rid of the legacy of hundreds of research reactors, mainly civilian, that use weapons-grade highly enriched uranium (HEU)

The total quantity of HEU in research reactors is small compared with military stocks, but still amounts to a few hundred tonnes — more than enough to pose a threat, as a nuclear bomb can be made with just a few dozen kilograms. Security can often be lower at research reactors, which are typically operated by universities and civilian labs, raising fears that nuclear material could fall into the hands of terrorists

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been helping countries convert their reactors to use low-enriched uranium (LEU), but cannot force them to do so. Nations including the United States want a renewed worldwide effort to speed up this process; in April, President Barack Obama hosted an international nuclear security summit in Washington DC, which agreed in principle to the ambitious goal of locking down unsecured civilian nuclear material within 4 years

why is the prime minister of Canada important

According to a 2015 report by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS)

global stocks of civilian HEU are as high as 137 tons, but this estimate has significant error margins given that no comprehensive inventory of civil HEU exists (total global HEU, including military stockpiles, is estimated at 1,340 tons). [1] Civil HEU reduction efforts are greatly hindered by poor global accounting. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), even the United States has failed to maintain an accurate inventory of the HEU that it has exported over the years, and attempts to balance the books could only account for 10 percent of the material. United States began development of the Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY)

a small fission reactor with a 30kg U-235 reactor core to power space travel. The KRUSTY system was tested in January 2018. Nonproliferation advocates criticized NASA’s decision to use HEU technology for space exploration, and have urged the adoption of LEU technologies. [28] These advocates worry that U.S. use of HEU for space applications could be used by other countries to justify their own production of HEU for civilian purposes. [29]

Spent nuclear fuel. Availability of nuclear material. Impediment to making weapons?

Canada is one of the world's major producers of nuclear substances. chalk river has been the major supplier of medical isotopes.

October 2011: AECL's commercial operations are acquired by Candu Energy Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian engineering company SNC-Lavalin AECL remains a federal Crown corporation and the corporate head office moves to chalk river.

February 2012: Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.'s nuclear research labs are up for sale, after the $15-million sale of AECL's Candu nuclear reactor business to SNC-Lavalin in October

Most of the Technetium used in the US was produced in Canada at the chalk river Nuclear plant. Those who remember Uranium One will note that this was also the route the Yellow Cake took.

thanks.

it's funny, i love the english language, spent my youth reading old penguin classics, i am always on alert for differnt sayings, phrases.

what i find so faschinating about English, and its the only language i speak, is when i hear a saying from Australia or England, I get it, but nobody would phrase it like that where i live. just a tiny bit of isolation and time has created enough nuance
