FAA slaps Boeing on the wrist with $5.4mn fine over faulty 737 MAX parts… as sacked CEO departs with $62mn

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has signaled that it will seek to fine Boeing for some $5.4 million, accusing the multi-billion dollar company of wittingly installing defective parts on its ill-fated 737 MAX jet.

The FAA said Boeing “failed to adequately oversee its suppliers to ensure they complied with the company's quality assurance system” in a statement on Friday, adding it “knowingly submitted aircraft for final FAA airworthiness certification after determining that the parts could not be used due to a failed strength test.”

The aviation regulator announced in June that over 300 Boeing aircraft might contain faulty components which could injure passengers or prevent planes from landing safely, and said it would require the company to replace the parts.

While the company has taken a serious hit in quarterly earnings over the last year after a series of fatal crashes involving the 737 MAX – which has been grounded worldwide since last March – each year Boeing counts its profits in the billions, making the proposed fine a barely perceptible slap on the wrist.

Boeing’s recently ousted CEO Dennis Muilenburg, who was fired in December as the company struggled in the aftermath of the MAX crashes, was given $62 million in benefits as he departed the firm – a sum dwarfing the FAA’s latest fine. He was slated to receive a “severance” package and stocks worth millions more, but forfeited the offer.

Microsoft in trouble after revelation unvetted Chinese contractors listened in on Skype calls with NO security

Microsoft is in damage control after former employee has claimed that contractors in China reviewed audio recordings from Skype calls over the open internet, with zero security measures, no vetting, and one shared password.

Cybersecurity was nonexistent in Microsoft’s audio transcription and rating program, according to a former contractor who spoke to the Guardian on Friday. The company sent contractors a username and password in plaintext, unencrypted email, using the same password for everyone who joined in a given year. They also neglected to vet workers, the ex-contractor said, adding that they merely took his bank account details when he was hired.

Other than the popular VoIP and messaging service, the Cortana voice assistant is also claimed to have been affected.

Theoretically, any contractor could access the account of any other, allowing one “bad apple” to wreak immense havoc on the system while covering their tracks.Nor were there any security measures in place to protect the recordings contractors listened to, the ex-employee said.

These were accessed over the open internet in China, where the companies Microsoft outsourced to were located. This, the report emphasizes, means users’ data could be pilfered or otherwise misused not only by a rogue contractor, but also by the Chinese government.

What it does not mention is that the American government has had access to Microsoft users’ data at least since the company became the first tech firm to join the NSA’s PRISM program in 2007, or that Microsoft actually helped the NSA penetrate its encryption.

The Boeing Story

US FREEDOM PAVILION: THE BOEING CENTER

During World War II, Boeing and its partners worked together to produce a staggering 98,965 aircraft, including the famed B-17 Flying Fortress. Representing nearly 28 percent of America’s total aircraft production, Boeing proved a principal contributor to industrial production during the war. These planes helped guarantee victory for Allied forces and served as a symbol of American might and innovation.

Today, The Boeing Company shares The National WWII Museum’s commitment to preserve and honor the legacy of service, sacrifice, and leadership of the men and women who served our country in uniform and the thousands of Home Front workers who were integral to Allied victory in World War II.

The US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center was made possible in part from a $15 million gift from The Boeing Company. The generous support of The Boeing Company also allowed the acquisition and restoration of the WWII B-17

VA Dems Declare State Capitol A Gun-Free Zone

On today’s Bearing Arms’ Cam & Co. I speak with Phillip Van Cleave of the Virginia Citizens Defense League about the upcoming Lobby Day on January 20th, which looks to be a gathering of epic proportions in Virginia political history. Van Cleave says more than 100 buses have been chartered to bring Second Amendment supporters to the statehouse, including several from out of state.

Unfortunately, I have to tell you that at least some of our interview is already out of date, because shortly after Van Cleave and I spoke, in what appears to be a shameful exercise in cowardice and dishonesty, Virginia Democrats passed their first gun ban of 2020: a total ban on firearms at the state capitol and office buildings. And according to the Richmond-Times Dispatch, Governor Ralph Northam is likely going to extend the gun ban to the capitol grounds.

FBI Director Tells Surveillance Court He ‘Deeply Regrets’ Failures In Carter Page FISA Process

FBI Director Christopher Wray told the federal surveillance court in a letter Friday that he “deeply regrets” the bureau’s many errors in the process to obtain surveillance warrants on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

“The FBI has the utmost respect for this Court, and deeply regrets the errors and omissions identified by the OIG,” Wray wrote in a letter to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC).

A judge on the FISC ordered the FBI on Dec. 17 to respond by Friday with a roadmap on how the bureau plans to address the problems identified in a Justice Department inspector general’s (IG) report regarding applications for warrants to wiretap Page.

FISA Court Appoints Obama-Era National Security Leader at DOJ to Review FBI Reforms

Last month presiding FISA judge Rosemary Collyer announced she would be stepping down early due to ‘health issues.’

Chief Justice Roberts tapped Judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee to replace Collyer.

On Friday, Judge Boasberg announced in an order that he has appointed Obama-era national security leader at the DOJ David S. Kris as amicus counsel to review the reforms the FBI will be making to its FISA application process.

This order was in response to the FBI abusing the FISA process after it obtained a total of four FISA warrants on Carter Page.

The government had until Friday January 10 (today) to “inform the Court…of what it has done, and plans to do, to ensure that the statement of facts in each FBI application accurately and completely reflects information possessed by the FBI that is material to any issue presented by the application.”

Bill Barr Needs To Answer For His Role In Ruby Ridge

The Second Amendment community has tried very hard to get members of the Judiciary Committee to persuade attorney general nominee William Barr to renounce his long-standing support for gun control. Opposing his nomination is not a position we relish. But if members of the Senate choose to ignore his record on guns, they should not ignore his role in the Ruby Ridge scandal.

Consider these facts.

Barr was in charge of the Justice Department during Ruby Ridge, and he knew what was going on.

Barr stated, under oath, that his chief gun priority would be the Ruby Ridge-like gun confiscation orders (sugar-coated as “red flag laws”).

You may remember that Barr’s federal agents descended on Randy Weaver’s Idaho compound in August, 1992, and (1) shot weaver in the back; (2) shot Weaver’s wife Vicki to death, while she was holding her infant son; (3) shot Weaver’s 14 year-old son to death; and (4) shot Weaver’s dog.

Courts subsequently largely exonerated Weaver, while excoriating the FBI and the Department of Justice. And, although then-Attorney General William Barr claimed to know nothing about the Ruby Ridge fiasco, a 1995 Washington Post article reported that there were 20 high-level DOJ calls about Weaver in the 24 hours preceding the murder of his wife — and two of them directly involved Barr.

After that, Barr spent huge amounts of pro bono time trying to get exoneration for the FBI sniper who shot Vicki Weaver to death. He pushed for immunity from prosecution, organized letters on his behalf, and framed arguments before the trial and appeals courts.

But long before Ruby Ridge, Barr’s hatred for the Second Amendment was clear.

Trump signs SPOONSS Act into law to mandate DOD use American flatware

A bill that will require the Department of Defense to purchase American-made steel flatware has been signed into law.

President Donald Trump has signed the Support Procurement of our Nation’s Stainless Steel Act (SPOONSS Act) into law as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, according to U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi’s office.

The primary beneficiary of the SPOONSS Act will be Sherrill Manufacturing in Sherrill, as the last flatware maker in America. The Department of Defense had to purchase American-made flatware until 2007, when a supply issue removed the requirement from the NDAA.

Two decades ago, the media weren’t obsessed with Chinese interference in a presidential election.

This summer we mark the 20th anniversary of a major investigation by Congress of attempts by a hostile foreign power to influence an American presidential election.

I’m glad the news media is pursuing the Trump–Russia scandal, but let’s not forget the differences between how they are covering Russia compared with how they reported a similar story — this one involving Communist China — that developed during Bill Clinton’s 1996 reelection campaign. The Washington Post reported in 1998 that “evidence gathered in federal surveillance intercepts has indicated that the Chinese government planned to increase China’s influence in the U.S. political process in 1996.”

Many people still believe that a major cover-up of that scandal worked — in part because the media expressed skepticism and devoted only a fraction of resources they are spending on the Trump–Russia story. Network reporters expressed outright skepticism of the story, with many openly criticizing the late senator Fred Thompson, the chair of the Senate investigating committee, for wasting time and money. On June 17, 1997, Katie Couric, then the Today co-anchor, asked the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward about the story: “Are members of the media, do you think, Bob, too scandal-obsessed, looking for something at every corner?”

According to an analysis by the Media Research Center, the news coverage of the congressional hearings on the China scandal in the summer of 1997 were dwarfed by reports on the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace and the death of Princess Diana.

The Chinese fundraising scandal involving DNC finance vice chairman John Huang first came to light in the final weeks of the 1996 presidential campaign. A former Commerce Department official, Huang was a top fundraiser who scooped up suspect foreign cash for Team Clinton.

A 1998 Senate Government Affairs Committee report on the scandal found “strong circumstantial evidence” that a great deal of foreign money had illegally entered the country in an attempt to influence the 1996 election. The DNC was forced to give back more than $2.8 million in illegal or improper donations from foreign nationals.

‘Complete Streets’ Programs Are Sweeping Over American Cities

Complete Streets’ promotes bicycles, scooters, foot traffic, light rail, etc., to the detriment of private transportation. In Pittsburgh, bike and lane usage will be zero in the winter when temps hover around 20 degrees.

Complete Streets is a global program inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Smart Growth America website states:

Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations.
