Several of those are probably already in receivership and we just don't know it.

I don't have any real sauce yet, but I'm willing to believe it was/is actually CIA or similar. For many years, it was the only domain registrar on the Internet, period.

 

It seems hard to believe that effective control over DARPA's baby was going to belong to some benign "real" company.

 

Even after the DNS marketplace was opened to "competition" with ICANN involved (another clown outfit that has a lot moar sauce, see previous diggs) they still have never behaved like a company that was functioning in a marketplace. I'm not using the term clown lightly, here.
