Back in the early days of the web, the late '90s, when https was a rarity, Verisign was the only game in town for trusted secure certificates for a given domain name. They were a monopoly in much the same way that Network Solutions was for domain registrations.

I personally watched as large players were issued certificates immediately through "brokers" that had "connections," while smaller players dealing directly with Verisign were given an endless runaround, delaying small e-commerce website launches by many months. This gave larger players a chance to become established in the absence of competition.

They stunk then and this stinks now.

It sounds like you are talking about authentication and non-repudiation.

For what it is worth, this is the very opposite of anonymity.

Why can't we have both?
