To some degree, this is a self-protection mechanism. If you believe there isn't a way out of your cell, no matter how luxurious, shredding your fingernails against the wall isn't a winning strategy anyway.
This guy is well into enemy territory, even if he doesn't know it or doesn't want to know. If and when the veil is lifted, he's going to have it easier than most of the population.
