Pakistan court annuls ex-president Musharraf’s death sentence

Lahore High Court (LHC) has annulled the death sentence handed to former president Pervez Musharraf, ruling that a special court which found him guilty of high treason was unconstitutional, according to a government law officer.

Following the LHC ruling, the ex-president is now a “free man,” Ishtiaq A. Khan, Additional Attorney General of Pakistan, who represented the government in the case, told AFP. The whole process against Musharraf – including the creation of a special court – was deemed to be void.

LHC “has declared everything from the initiation of the complaint and its conclusion unconstitutional,” Khan said, as cited by Reuters.

Earlier in the day, Musharraf’s lawyer Azhar Siddique told the media outside the court that the judges have “nullified everything” against his client.

Musharraf was sentenced to death in absentia on charges of high treason and undermining the constitution by the now-void special court in December last year. The verdict received a mixed reaction with Pakistan’s top military and government figures harshly criticizing the decision.

A provision to hang Musharraf’s body in front of parliament for three days, should he perish before the death sentence could be carried out, was included in the verdict by one of the judges and sparked a backlash. It was branded “unprecedented and despicable” by Law Minister Farogh Naseem, who called for the “mentally unfit” judge to be ousted.

A controversial figure in Pakistan, Musharraf was a general and army chief when he seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999. The accusations of treason against him date back to 2007, when he imposed a state of emergency as he sought reelection as president.

Critics say Musharraf’s leadership was a setback for Pakistan. They accuse him of opening the country up to the CIA and its anti-terrorism program of targeted drone killings. They also believe he was linked to the assassination of his political opponent, Benazir Bhutto, in 2007. He has always firmly denied the allegation.

His supporters, however, believe he is a true patriot, who stood up to Islamist militants and staunchly defended Islamabad’s interests both at home and internationally.

8 More Tennessee Counties to Rebuke Gov. Bill Lee’s Refugee Inflow

At least eight additional counties across Tennessee are ready to rebuke Gov. Bill Lee’s decision to bring more refugees to the state, Breitbart News has learned.

For fiscal year 2020, President Donald Trump will continue cutting refugee admissions by reducing former President Barack Obama’s refugee inflow by at least 80 percent. This reduction would mean a maximum of 18,000 refugees can be resettled in the U.S. between October 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020. This is merely a numerical limit and not a goal federal officials are supposed to reach.

Coupled with the refugee reduction, Trump signed an executive order that gives localities, counties, and states veto power over whether they want to resettle refugees in their communities.

After immense backlash from state legislators and voters, insiders told Breitbart News that now another eight counties are considering a resolution that Loudon County recently adopted, which rebukes the governor’s decision to allow more refugees and bans resettlement in the region.

Breitbart News was the first to report that activists and Tennessee county officials had drafted the resolution against Lee’s decision.

The eight counties also weighing whether to ban resettlement and rebuke Lee’s refugee inflow include:

• Wilson County

• Cumberland County

• Cannon County

• Smith County

• Macon County

• Tipton County

• Monroe County

• Stewart County

Wilson County, located just outside of Nashville, will vote January 27 on the resolution to ensure no refugees are resettlement in the area.

“The resolution is a record saying ‘Bill Lee, this is what this county does not want to do. This is our nonconsent saying we do not want refugees in our county right now. We’re letting you know that we do not consent,'” an insider told Breitbart News.

State legislators were “blindsided,” according to the insider, when Lee announced that he would allow refugee contractors on behalf of the State Department to resettle more refugees in the state for fiscal year 2020.

Lee is one of 19 Republican governors who have asked the State Department to resettle refugees in their states. Thus far, the only Republican governor to halt refugee resettlement to his state is Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas. Republican governors asking for more refugees include:

This means that refugees could be resettled in neighboring counties even if they have not consented to admit refugees.

Those refugee contractors, who have a full monopoly on the refugee resettlement program, include:

Church World Service (CWS), Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), International Rescue Committee (IRC), U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS), U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and World Relief Corporation (WR).

Supreme Court declines to hear 'Free the Nipple' case

The Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from three women involved in the so-called Free the Nipple movement who were arrested for exposing their breasts in public.

The women sought to challenge a city law in Laconia, N.H., that they argued amounted to unconstitutional discrimination on the basis of gender, part of a broader movement against indecent exposure laws.

“They were arrested and prosecuted as women for doing what any man may lawfully do,” the challengers wrote in their petition to the Supreme Court. “For being both topless and female in public, each was convicted of violating an ordinance criminalizing the public exposure of her ‘female breast.’ ”

The decision to deny the appeal means the requisite four justices did not sign on to hear the petition. As is typical, the justices did not explain their reasoning, and there were no dissents from the denial.

The activists were arrested in 2016 for being topless on a beach and last year lost in the New Hampshire Supreme Court, prompting their appeal to the justices.

The case was Lilley v. New Hampshire.

Lawmakers to call on ICE to release all transgender detainees

House Democrats plan to call on a key immigration agency to release all transgender people who are currently being detained, arguing that the U.S. has failed to follow guidelines to protect individuals who face more perilous conditions in detention than other migrants.

“We write to demand the release of all transgender people currently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” the letter to ICE is expected to say, according to an early copy obtained by The Hill.

“Transgender migrants and asylum seekers are particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment, solitary confinement, physical assault, and medical neglect. These inhumane conditions and systematic abuses are evidenced in countless reports and accounts by formally detained people,” continues the letter, which will be addressed to acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf and ICE acting director Matthew Albence.

The letter cites research articles from the Human Rights Campaign, Amnesty International and the Center for American Progress in arguing that due to their gender identity, transgender migrants are more likely to face “the pervasive use of solitary confinement” and that they are “97 times more likely to be sexually victimized” compared to “their cis-gender and straight counterparts in detention.”

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), who is leading the effort, circulated a letter to other Democratic colleagues last week seeking their signatures on his ICE letter, in which he argues there is a legal basis for releasing the transgender detainees.

Majority of Latin nations oppose Trump border wall

A total of 90% of Mexican nationals disapprove of President Trump's push to build a wall along the southwestern American border, according to a new study released by the Pew Research Center.

Respondents in more than 6 out of 10 countries in a worldwide poll said they opposed the construction of a wall, with the majority of respondents of Latin American nations saying they are against it.

"Across the 33 nations polled, a median of six-in-ten disapprove of building a wall on the border of the U.S. and Mexico, one of Trump’s well-known campaign promises," the study said.

Trump was handed a major victory in his fight to construct more border wall last week when the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to reverse an injunction that blocked $3.6 billion in military construction for funds for the border wall plan.

Iran: Video Shows Woman Protester Shot, Bleeding on Street

Iran rejected the authenticity of a video circulating on Monday, and confirmed to be real by the Associated Press, of anti-regime protesters helping a woman bleeding profusely after reportedly being shot by Iranian police.

The woman was one of thousands to take the streets again after protesters erupted on Saturday in response to the Iranian regime admitting it had shot down a Ukrainian commercial airliner last week, killing 176 mostly Iranian, Ukrainian, and Canadian passengers. The Islamic regime had concluded in its preliminary report that the Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA) flight out of Tehran had crashed after its engine spontaneously caught fire, but ultimately admitted its military had shot the plane down with a Russian Tor missile after mounting international pressure.

Tehran has yet to admit that it lied about the fate of the airliner, instead insisting it had honestly reported its initial findings. Ample video and photographic evidence of Iranian officials bulldozing the crash site before international inspectors arrived contradict this claim.

The incident triggered protests attracting at least a thousand people, according to the state-run Fars News Agency, on Saturday. While Fars insisted the outcry was limited to Tehran and only numbered in the hundreds, independent reports said thousands, many of them students, took the streets in at least five other cities. The Kurdish outlet Rudaw described the crowds nationwide as numbering in the “tens of thousands.”

By Monday, reports began circulating that Iranian police were shooting live fire at protesters. Videos also showed the liberal use of tear gas to disperse crowds in Tehran. Radio Farda, a U.S.-funded information and news outlet, shared a graphic video of blood dripping in the streets of Tehran, believed to be from protesters that police shot with bullets. Those in the videos reportedly shout “clerics get lost!,” “death to the dictator!,” “They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here,” and other anti-government slogans in Farsi. Reuters reported police also beating protesters with batons.
