…..When people think of Haiti, they picture a troubled nation plagued with extreme poverty rates, high illiteracy rates, multiple coup’s, government corruption and the highest AIDS rate in the western hemisphere. They picture a nation that relies almost completely on the aid of industrialized nations and private benefactors. What they don’t picture though is a nation potentially sitting on an oil field dwarfing Venezuela’s which is the largest exporter of oil in the western hemisphere, a country teeming with precious metals such as Gold, Copper, Uranium 225 and 238, which can be used to power nuclear reactors and the world’s largest supply of a rare mineral used in building spacecraft-iridium. They don’t picture a nation that has been visited by multiple Canadian and American firms in regards to mining these precious metals and that according to scientists, a nation whose oil field in comparison to Venezuela is like comparing a swimming pool to a glass of water……

Recent increase in Antarctic Peninsula ice core uranium concentrations caused from Australia's uranium mines, study finds

"Conclusions

Our study provides the first continuous, high resolution record of U concentrations from an Antarctic Peninsula ice core. We report significant U increases in the atmosphere over the last two decades. Australia is the most likely source of U pollution captured by this 27-year Antarctic Peninsula snow archive. Therefore, we conclude that U deposition at DP [Detroit Plateau] is likely related to U mining operations in Australia. […]"

Uranium record from a 3 m snow pit at Dome Argus, East Antarctica

Abstract

Understanding the distribution and transport of Uranium is important because it can lead to both chemical and radiological toxicity. This study presents the Uranium concentrations time series from 1964 to 2009 obtained from a 3 m deep snow pit at Dome Argus, East Antarctic Plateau. The data shows that Uranium concentrations vary from 0.0067 pg g-1 to 0.12 pg g-1, with a mean concentration of 0.044 pg g-1. Its mean concentration is 2–3 folds lower than at West Antarctica study sites, such as the Antarctic Peninsula (mean 0.12 pg g-1), IC-6 (Ice Core-6) (mean 0.11 pg g-1) and a suite of ice cores from the US ITASE traverse. Before the mid-1980s, the varieties of Uranium concentrations are relatively stable, with a very low mean concentration of 0.016 pg g-1and its main source is sea salt deposition, while a small number of anthropogenic sources are likely to be caused by Uranium mining operations in South Africa. A remarkable increase of Uranium concentrations has occurred since the mid-1980s (by a factor of ~ 9) compared with the amount before the mid-1980s. This increase coincides with the Uranium records at IC-6 and Antarctic Peninsula (DP-07-01) during the same period, and are mostly attributed to Uranium mining operations in Australia as a potential primary anthropogenic Uranium source. Our observations suggest that Uranium pollution in the atmosphere might have already become a global phenomenon……

…..Conclusions

This study presents Uranium concentrations time series from 1964 to 2009 at a depth of 3m in Dome A, East Antarctica. Before the mid-1980s, the Uranium concentrations in Dome A are greatly affected by sea salt deposition and a small number of additional sources are possibly caused by Uranium mining operations in South Africa during that period. After the mid-1980s, Uranium concentrations have significantly increased, which coincide with the study of Uranium record at IC-6 and Antarctic Peninsula (DP-07-01) at the same period. This phenomenon has been largely attributed to many Uranium mining operations in Australia since the mid-1980s. The results indicate that Uranium pollution might has become a global phenomenon dispersal by atmospheric circulation.

Uranium mineralization in southern

Victoria Land, Antarctica

For the past 10 antarctic field seasons, an airborne gamma-ray

spectrometric survey has been conducted over widely separated parts of the continent. Localized accumulations of both

primary and secondary uranium minerals have been discovered at several localities scattered along the Transantarctic

Mountains from the Scott Glacier to northern Victoria Land.

During the 1985-1986 field season, we discovered a number of

highly significant radiation anomalies in the area between the

Koettlitz Glacier and the Pyramid Trough. The occurrences

consist of pegmatite vein complexes which contain an association of primary uranium and thorium minerals. Of still greater

significance is the fact that abundant secondary uranium minerals were found in association with the primary deposits, and

they indicate clearly that uranium is geochemically mobile under the conditions imposed by the and polar climate that now

exists in southern Victoria Land.

On the ground, we visited two veins which had been identified from the airborne gamma-ray record. The veins are separated by several kilometers. Preliminary results of a uranium

analysis performed by neutron activation indicate a concentration of 0.12 percent uranium in a composite sample from

the two veins. Even higher levels of thorium are present. The

nature of the primary uranium mineralization is currently under investigation. Autoradiographs shown in figures 1 and 2

indicate the distribution of radioactive minerals in polished

surfaces of samples from the two radioactive veins. Incrustations of secondary yellow uranium minerals were found in the

radioactive vein locality at the head of the Pyramid Trough. In

addition, strongly fluorescent coatings of carbonates containing

uranium, were distributed along fractures extending inward at

least 40 centimeters from outcrop surfaces. They furnish clear

evidence of mobilization of uranium in solution in the surfaceweathering zone. Our preliminary studies indicate that some of

the minerals present may be new and previously unknown

forms but many show the typical yellowish green fluorescence….

Another Anon said before and I agree. It really doesn't matter if a post goes into notables or not. It still was posted and it still is part of the record. In fact, I can envision future searches for posts based on the criteria that they were not put in notables. Nor much commented on. Silence can speak volumes.
