You have to accept that they consider themselves a different species to ourselves. One that has the rights as the premier species on Earth. They have the Right to feast upon the lesser species. However if a sentient species that becomes aware of its' place upon this Food Chain they can act to preserve their species.
When the veil is getting lifted a school shooting will always take place. Always. An emotional distraction based upon the statistic that everyone will have a family member who they can associate with the atrocity.
