MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Casting aside traditional silence on U.S. politics, Mexico’s president and leading businessmen are exhorting California voters to reject an anti- immigration ballot question.
The American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico warned at a news conference Thursday that Proposition 187 could hurt U.S.-Mexican trade that is booming under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Proposition 187 would cut off public schooling and deny all but emergency health care for illegal immigrants as part of California’s effort to confront a long-brewing budget crisis. The ballot proposition, to be voted on Tuesday, is a major issue in the state’s governor’s race
