Kansas earthquake would cause more widespread damage because it is a different base than California. Think of California as sitting on bedrock and Kansas (and most of the midwest) sitting on sand. California quakes are generally localized. Kansas would be widespread because of the strata it sits on. It spreads farther out from the epicenter.
