A team of researchers at U. Colorado created a different kind of concrete — one that is alive and can even reproduce.

Darpa, the Department of Defense’s speculative research arm is the project’s funder, and the Department of Defense is interested.

Minerals in the new material are deposited not by chemistry but by cyanobacteria, and gelatin is used as a binder.

"Living concrete" might be the best building material for when you can't truck in lots of material, like in remote deserts, or even other planets.
