American private equity firm, founded in 1990 by former Drexel Burnham Lambert banker Leon Black. Less than six months after the collapse of Drexel, the founders of Apollo had already begun a series of ventures. Apollo Investment Fund L.P., the first of their private equity investment funds, was formed to make investments in distressed companies. Apollo's first fund raised approximately $400 million of investor commitments on the strength of Black's reputation as a prominent lieutenant of Michael Milken and key player in the buyout boom of the 1980s The firm specializes in leveraged buyout transactions and purchases of distressed securities involving corporate restructuring, special situations, and industry consolidations. Apollo is headquartered in New York City, with additional offices across North America, Europe and Asia. The company's stock is publicly traded on the NYSE under the symbol 'APO'.

 

As of October 2019, Apollo had over US$312 billion in assets under management, and in 2016 it was the second-largest US-based alternative asset management firm. Among the most notable companies currently owned by Apollo are Cox Media Group, Constellis, Claire's, Caesars Entertainment Corporation, CareerBuilder, Novitex Enterprise Solutions, ADT, and Rackspace.

 

Tiger Management Corp., also known as "The Tiger Fund,"

American hedge fund and family office founded by Julian Robertson. The fund began investing in 1980 and closed in March 2000. It continues to operate today in direct public equity investments and seeding new investment funds. Julian Robertson, a stockbroker and former United States Navy officer, started Tiger Management in 1980 with $8 million in capital. By 1996, the fundโ€™s assets had increased to $7.2 billion in value. After closing his Tiger Fund in 2000, Robertson started to use his own capital, experience, and infrastructure to support and finance ("seed") upcoming hedge fund managers. As of September 2009, Robertson has helped launch 38 hedge funds ("Tiger Seeds") in return for a stake in their fund management companies. Apart from those Tiger Seeds, a considerable number of analysts and managers Robertson employed and mentored at Tiger Management went out on their own and are now running some of the best-known hedge fund firms, called "Tiger Cubs", run by Tiger alumni such as Ole Andreas Halvorsen, Chris Shumway, Lee Ainslie, Stephen Mandel, John Griffin, David Gerstenhaber, David Goel, Chase Coleman, Martin Hughes and Paul Touradji.
