In 1897 two men flew an airship around the United States. They landed in many locations to take on supplies, to make repairs and adjustments. Although the Sonora Aero Club had been building experimental airships in California since the 1850's, this new model was very much like the later dirigible and zeppelin airships, a cigar shaped balloon with a long narrow cabin slung underneath. However it differed because it had two rather large propellers. In fact it travelled faster than any Zeppelin or other airship since that time. It also had an axle inside and some type of rotating mechanism which many believe to have been dual counter-rotating gyroscopes.

The two men were Amos Dolbear and Samuel Tillman who was a professor of Chemistry at West Point. Many believe they were actually working on the airship for the Department of the Army.

Dolbear wrote the attached book, after the airship flights.
