The Washington Post has taken heat from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, whose official lamented its coverage as local traders voiced outrage over perceived aggression by another Bezos venture, Amazon.
There’s “a lot of problems” in how the newspaper is reporting from India, Vijay Chauthaiwale, chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) foreign affairs department, told Reuters.
“The Washington Post’s editorial policy is highly biased and agenda driven,” the official explained, without highlighting any examples.
He previously complained about foreign coverage of Indian-controlled Kashmir which was recently stripped of its decades-long autonomy, alleging blatant bias against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The swipe at the newspaper nearly coincided with Bezos’ trip to India. The founder of Amazon – who also owns the Washington Post – has been trying to aggressively pivot to India’s burgeoning online retail market.

737 MAX crisis could cost Boeing $20 billion, Wall Street analyst says
The US aerospace giant Boeing' costs are likely to rise substantially, analysts say, as airlines continue to push back MAX 737’s from their schedules. The company's best-selling planes have been grounded now for the 11th month.
The worldwide grounding had airlines lose more than $1 billion in revenue and Boeing more than $7 billion. The company, which took a $5.6 billion pretax charge in July to compensate airlines and other customers for the grounding, is to report full-year and fourth-quarter earnings on January 29. Some Wall Street analysts expect it to take additional charges related to the troubled airplane.

China Says Economic Growth Fell to Lowest in 30 Years
China’s economy last year grew at the slowest rate in three decades and the country’s birth rate fell to the lowest level on record.
Gross domestic product grew just 6.1 percent in 2019, according to data released Friday by China. That was below forecast but within the 6.1 percent to 6.5 percent rate the Chinese government says it targets.
China’s economy was weighed down by U.S. tariffs, high levels of food inflation, wavering confidence due to political unrest in Hong Kong, weak consumer spending, and rising unemployment.
Experts say that China’s economic figures are more accurate than they were in the past, when many regional reports appeared to be based on local officials’ attempts to provide their superiors in the ruling Communist Party with the numbers they believed were desired rather than a matter-of-fact assessment of the economy. Yet China’s economy remains clouded by so much opacity and state-involvement that it remains difficult to know how accurate the economic figures are.
On average between 1978 and 2017, China’s economy expanded 9.5 percent per year, according to official statistics.

The critically acclaimed Showtime series Homeland received secret assistance from the Obama-era Central Intelligence Agency and its then-director John Brennan, according to a new interview with the producers of the show and network executives.
In a roundtable conversation published Thursday by the Hollywood Reporter, the team behind Homeland revealed that they met with intelligence officials at CIA headquarters in Langely, Virginia. Although they didn’t say when the meeting took place, they told the magazine that it was during the time that Brennan was running the agency.
Brennan served as CIA director from 2013 to 2017, during the Barack Obama administration.
The wide-ranging conversation touched on how Homeland was created and how the creative team was able to tap into the knowledge of CIA agents, ambassadors, ex-military personnel, journalists, and even whistleblower Edward Snowden.
At one point, the Homeland team visited Langely to meet with the real-life counterparts to the characters portrayed in the series.

Ever since the abomination of Roe V. Wade unleashed a holocaust of death upon America those of us who value life have prayed for a leader who could and would do what they should. Back in 1973 when the Burger Court turned the Constitution on its head by discovering a constitutional right to kill the unborn then President Nixon didn’t even make a public statement. Privately he said that in some instances abortion was necessary.
Since then we’ve elected several presidents who said publicly that they were pro-life: Ronnie Reagan, George I, and George II. All three took some steps to restrict federal funding for abortion and made public statements condemning abortion and boosting the pro-life cause. All three gave taped addresses to the massive annual Right-to-life march in Washington filled with values and voters.
Of course, since the slaughter of the innocents gained the federal stamp of approval we’ve had every Democrat candidate champion the freedom to choose death. And we’ve had two who made it to the White House: Clinton and Obama. Once there they both proudly opened the spigot from the Treasury to the abortion mills forcing all taxpayers to pour billions into the industrial scale elimination of generations of Americans.
Then came Trump.
Unlike other politicians who tell us what we want to hear and then forget what they said until they need our votes again, President Trump works daily to fulfill his campaign pledges. Many pro-life people worked hard to elect President Trump. That hard work has paid off for the pro-life movement and the unborn! New Jobless Claims Fall for 5th Straight Week Amid US Labor Market Strength
The number of initial jobless claims—a measure of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits—fell for the fifth straight week in early January, pointing to ongoing labor market strength.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 204,000 for the week ended Jan. 11, the Labor Department said on Thursday (pdf). Economists polled by Reuters expected claims would rise to 216,000 in the latest week, while those surveyed by MarketWatch forecast an even higher print of 220,000.
The better-than-expected initial claims figures are an encouraging sign for the U.S. economy, which saw slowing job growth in December.
The U.S. economy created 145,000 jobs last month after adding 256,000 positions in November, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

Owner of D.C. Area Tax Preparation Business Indicted for Tax Fraud
A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. returned an indictment today charging an Indianapolis, Indiana, resident with conspiracy to file false claims, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, aiding and assisting the preparation of false tax returns, and tax evasion, announced Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman of the Justice Department’s Tax Division.
According to the indictment, Awett Tedla was the owner and operator of Speedy Tax Services LLC, a tax preparation business in Washington, D.C. and District Heights, Maryland. From 2012 through 2016, Tedla and her coconspirators allegedly obtained and used third party identities to file fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claiming tax refunds. The indictment also charges that from 2013 through 2016, Tedla falsified her own personal returns by omitting business receipts.

The traditional view of African-American voters supporting the Democratic Party could be upended by three recent polls, which show growing support for President Trump among black voters. What if in November enough black Americans voted for Donald Trump to re-elect him into the presidency?
This unlikely straw has been in the political winds recently because in three opinion polls—Emerson, Marist and Rasmussen—President Trump registered about 30% support among black voters.
Asked to respond by, former Hillary Clinton adviser Joel Payne said: “I have a better chance of jumping center for the Celtics tonight than Donald Trump having 30% support in the African-American community.” He may get the call.
The reason this unlikely 30% number breaks the seals in Democratic heads is that for years it has been a rule of thumb in politics that if black support for Republicans ever reached 20% of the total vote, a Democratic presidential candidate would not be able to win, ever.

Ahmad Alamalhoda, representative of Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Mashhad and the Friday prayer imam of this important city in northeast Iran, called for decisive action against the college students, resorting to remarks that can be interpreted as justification for attacks by the regime’s oppressive security forces.
“These people should come and insult all of our principles and values, to rise against us and we should just sit there and watch?” Alamalhoda said in his remarks on January 14.

As superbugs spread, WHO raises alarm over lack of new antibiotics
The World Health Organisation warned Friday that a dire lack of new antibiotics was threatening efforts to curb the spread of drug-resistant bacteria, which kill tens of thousands of people each year.
The UN health agency published two new reports revealing that there are few new effective antibiotics in the pipeline, meaning that the world is running out of options for fighting so-called superbugs.
"Never has the threat of antimicrobial resistance been more immediate and the need for solutions more urgent," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
"Numerous initiatives are underway to reduce resistance, but we also need countries and the pharmaceutical industry to step up and contribute with sustainable funding and innovative new medicines," he said.

Thin-film identification tags for transferring data to touchscreen devices
Today, countless electronic devices have touchscreens, including smart phones, tablets and smart home appliances. Touchscreen interfaces have become some of the most common means for users to communicate with and browse through their devices.
With this in mind, a research group at imec in Belgium has recently carried out a study exploring the potential of touchscreen interfaces for enabling the simple transfer of data to and from devices connected to the internet. In a paper published in Nature Electronics, the team showed that commercial touchscreens can be used as reader interfaces for capacitive coupled data transfer using a 12-bit, thin-film identification tag powered by a battery or photovoltaic cell.
"Our field of expertise is flexible electronics for IoT and Internet of Everything applications," Kris Myny, principal scientist at imec and one of the researchers who carried out the study, told Tech Xplore. "In this field, we look into thin-film circuits, i.e. flexible RFID tags that can be embedded in objects and communicate to RFID and/or NFC readers. Based on this, our next step was to investigate whether we could expand the number of readers."

Former FBI Director James Comey is back in the news this week after The New York Times reported late Thursday that he is again under investigation for leaking information to the media. The Justice Department Inspector General previously found that Comey was a leaker and violated FBI policy in his handling of FBI memos, including material containing the “code name and true identity” of a sensitive source. Now, he is again accused of leaking information. There is an element of a modus operandi in the story since the same academic Comey used in the earlier leaks is also named in this leak, Columbia Law Professor Daniel Richman.

UK expands Hezbollah asset freeze, targets entire movement
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain expanded the scope of its asset-freezing measures against Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah on Thursday to cover the entire organization as well as its military wing.
The finance ministry move follows Britain’s decision last year to classify the whole group a terrorist organization due to its destabilizing influence in the Middle East.
The heavily armed Shi’ite group was established in 1982 by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. It is widely seen as the most powerful player in Lebanon and is part of an Iranian-led regional alliance in conflict with U.S.-allied Gulf Arab states.
Gilad Erdan, minister of public security and strategic affairs for Hezbollah’s foe Israel, said he welcomed the measure, adding that Europe was waking up to the threat from proxies of Iran.
