hmm. so you can find the mason dixon line. i think civil war was a family war. still have present day impact on politics. people vote like their family or people in their culture/city/town. for example. you see the blue line running thru the south, it probably matches that purple line of "upland south". why are the upland south people voting alongside the "northeast and utah" people. why are large swaths of people in the upland south voting alongside the northerners, the unionists. CARPETBAGGERS. easy. u can see alot more with a more detailed political map, but it takes more work to get the sauce out of it. u can see in third map all the "northern states" the acadians, finish, scandanavians, all LEAN the same direction, towards the northern democrats, the northeast and utah crowd.
north / south division still exists, but different families found success moving west across the country establishing "branches" or "strong holds" for their families, from oklahoma california . people came from west too like astor in oregon > montana > SEE they made all the way to wisconsin/minnisota.
i didn't really say what i wanted to lol. long story short. don't know if i am right. but i think you can overlay a genetic map on top of a political map and find they are highly correlated.
this map is interesting because it doesn't use state lines, but still draws some well defined boundaries around "voting groups"
