While that may have been true in the past, it is not so today.

I hate unions, as they take your money. And so many fucking rules, and hierarchy, and shoolyard bullshit, BUT it's a good starting point.

Once you get some time under your belt, consider ALL your options.

Experience = Options and Upward movement.

You can bounce the union and go to a local contracting firm, or if you're happy where you're at, stay planted.

Once you get even more experience, your ultimate plan should be to start your own business, and hire others to do what you already mastered. That's where the very good money is.

Having done it for 15 years and running my own business now, my reflections come from experience.

Still, opinions differ.

Bonus tidbit: always treat those you come into contact with while on the job with respect and kindness. Even/especially when they're assholes.

Reason for that is b/c guaranteed someone you meet while you're on the job will want to hire you. That happens all the time. If their impression of you is good, your opportunities will increase exponentially. THE FUTURE IS UP TO YOU, ANON. Make it what you want.

LOL you opened the floodgates on a shit-ton of wisdom here, anon.

Hope you're taking notes! Literally.

And it's true, unions will hold you back and take your dough.

Get into a local private construction/trade company in whatever field interests you, and you'll get experience super fukin fast.
