BARR: The Impeachment Trial Briefs Are In, And The Winner Is…

The House impeachment managers and the lawyers for President Donald Trump have both filed their memorandums for the Senate impeachment trial which gets underway in earnest today. While the two documents are nearly identical in length, the president’s is by far the stronger document.

Neither memorandum breaks new legal, political or constitutional grounds, but there was no expectation they would. The only “new” evidence – if it can be characterized as such – is that the managers’ memorandum includes references to matters that came to light in the month since the two Articles of Impeachment were passed by the House. The managers discuss statements recently made by Ukraine-American operative Lev Parnas in television interviews and refer also to a Government Accountability Office memorandum released last week after being requested by Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen. The GAO report found fault with the grounds on which the Office of Management and Budget temporarily delayed the release of military assistance dollars to Ukraine last summer.

Even if the Senate decides to consider this “new” evidence, however, it adds nothing to the underlying question confronting the upper chamber – whether President Trump is guilty of the offenses alleged against him by the Democrat majority in the House and should be removed from office. If the grounds on which this seminal question is to be answered are to be gleaned from these first filings, the answer is a resounding, “Not Guilty.”

While the trial brief filed on the president’s behalf is over 100 pages long, the operative language, capturing the full essence of why the Senate trial should result in acquittal, is set forth in the preliminary “Answer” filed last Saturday and which continues as a central theme throughout the memorandum: “[the] Articles of Impeachment are constitutionally invalid on their face [and] fail to allege any crime or violation of law whatsoever, let alone ‘high Crimes and Misdemeanors,’ as required by the Constitution.”

The head of the International Monetary Fund has warned that the global economy risks a return of the Great Depression, driven by inequality and financial sector instability.

Speaking at the Peterson Institute of International Economics in Washington, Kristalina Georgieva said new IMF research, which compares the current economy to the “roaring 1920s” that culminated in the great market crash of 1929, revealed that a similar trend was already under way.

While the inequality gap between countries had closed in the last two decades, it had increased within countries, she said, singling out the UK for particular criticism.

“In the UK, for example, the top 10% now control nearly as much wealth as the bottom 50%. This situation is mirrored across much of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), where income and wealth inequality have reached, or are near, record highs.”

She added: “In some ways, this troubling trend is reminiscent of the early part of the 20th century – when the twin forces of technology and integration led to the first gilded age, the roaring 20s, and, ultimately, financial disaster.”

She warned that fresh issues such as the climate emergency and increased trade protectionism meant the next 10 years were likely to be characterised by social unrest and financial market volatility.

“If I had to identify a theme at the outset of the new decade, it would be increasing uncertainty,” she said.

With disputes still raging between the US and Europe, she said “the global trading system is in need of a significant upgrade”.

Georgieva said uncertainty affects not only businesses but individuals, especially given the rising inequality within many countries.

She said that “excessive inequality hinders growth and … can fuel populism and political upheaval”.

Eric LeCompte, the head of debt charity Jubilee USA, said: “The IMF delivered a stark message about the potential for another massive financial disaster that we last experienced during the Great Depression.

“With inequality on the rise and concerns of stability in the markets, we need to take this warning seriously.”

Hillary Clinton denied in an interview published Tuesday that she knew about sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, even though at least two prominent celebrities have said they warned the Democrat’s inner circle about the disgraced Hollywood mogul.

“Speaking of Hollywood, with his trial in the news right now, do you have regrets about your lengthy association with Harvey Weinstein?” Lacey Rose of Hollywood Reporter asked Clinton.

“How could we have known?” the former secretary of state replied.

“He raised money for me, for the Obamas, for Democrats in general. And that at the time was something that everybody thought made sense. And of course, if all of us had known what we know now, it would have affected our behavior.”

Actress Lena Dunham and journalist Tina Brown have said they told close Clinton associates about Weinstein’s sordid behavior. Weinstein has been indicted on a slew of sex crimes charges in New York and Los Angeles.

Dunham told The New York Times for a story published Dec. 5, 2017, that she told Kristina Schake, the Clinton campaign’s deputy director of communications, about first- and second-hand rumors she had heard about Weinstein.

“I just want you to let you know that Harvey’s a rapist and this is going to come out at some point,” Dunham recalled telling Schake.

“I think it’s a really bad idea for him to host fund-raisers and be involved because it’s an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault,” she also told the Clinton aide.

Big Brother Australia aims to ban cash spending

Australia’s revenue chiefs are bidding to ban large cash payments to hobble drug dealers and other criminal syndicates, but critics see a more sinister agenda that will allow banks and bureaucrats to manipulate ordinary citizens’ spending habits.

A bill outlawing cash transactions of A$10,000 (US$6,900) or more has been passed by the lower house of parliament and is now being considered by the Senate. Anyone caught breaking the law could be jailed for two years if the legislation becomes law.

Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar says the legislation, expected to be enacted in February, is aimed at criminal gangs that make cash purchases of cars, houses and jewelry to launder their profits from illegal activities.

“As cash is largely untraceable, this makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to trace these activities,” he said, according to media reports.

“The government is sending a strong message to the community that using cash to avoid obligations and potentially engage in criminal activity is a serious matter that requires a sufficient level of deterrence.”

Drug dealers are the main target of the legislation. The Reserve Bank has calculated that they have as much as A$1 billion ($690 million) of cash stashed away at any one time for use in transactions, or 1% of all the notes in circulation.

Australians spend an estimated A$13.5 billion ($9.3 billion) on illicit drugs each year, according to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, with methamphetamines accounting for about 50% of the value.

The narcotics trade is part of a black economy worth as much as A$6 billion (US$4.1 billion), equivalent to 3% of gross domestic product (GDP), that has two components: people concealing legal activities to avoid paying tax and those involved in illegal practices who want to avoid detection.

Both will be pursued under the planned cash law, which will require banks and businesses to report any amounts of A$10,000 or more but still allow private deals involving two parties, such as the sale of an automobile.

Anti-Macron Protesters Cut Power Lines, Cause Massive Outages to Distribution, Trains, Suburbs

In an escalation of protests against reforms being pushed by President Emanuel Macron, French union workers cut the power line to the world’s largest wholesale market in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A local energy branch of the far-left General Confederation of Labour Union (CGT), citing the pension reforms of President Macron, claimed responsibility for cutting a powerline that supplied energy to the Rungis International Market, a 234-hectare wholesale facility outside of Paris that does 9 billion euros in trade per year. The outage lasted 90 minutes at the market before generators kicked in.

“We cut the power at the Rungis source substation this morning,” said union representative Franck Jouano, per Le Parisien.

“Our goal is to mark the occasion symbolically because there is little talk of electricians and gas, who are affected by the reform. We also want to mobilize against this reform because the government does not react to the demonstrations”, he added.

The power cut also shut down the rail shuttle service to Orly Airport, Paris’ second-largest airport, as well as affecting 11 different suburbs of Paris. Hotels in the areas impacted claim that customers were trapped inside elevators as a result of the power outage.

Julien Denormandie, the City and Housing Minister, denounced the action as “scandalous” and “irresponsible”, saying that the unions “must stop these actions that degrade the climate of social dialogue”.

The powerline sabotage is a clear escalation from France’s left-wing unions in the fight over pension reform, following a month of transit strikes and street protests against President Emanuel Macron’s proposed reforms.

On Friday dozens of protestors shut down the Louvre, forcing the museum to close after several far-left unions called for public actions in response to Macron’s plan which they claim will “lower everyone’s pensions.”

Later that evening President Macron was escorted out of a theatre in Paris after a group of protestors attempted to confront the French leader. The protestors stormed through a police line into the building chanting “Macron, resign!” and “We are here, even if Macron does not want us we are here”.

Despite the protests, President Macron has held firm on his proposals, in which he would centralise the pension system that is currently spread out in dozens of different programs and provides special provisions for transit workers to retire in their 50s. Macron has also proposed to raise the age of pension eligibility from 62 to 64, in an attempt to keep more labourers in the workforce.

Iran Has Spies Across U.S., Officials Warn After Tehran Posts $3M Bounty on Trump

Following Iran's announcement of a three million dollar bounty for the assassination of President Donald Trump, U.S. officials and terrorism experts are warning that Tehran has significantly expanded its terror capabilities in America, potentially allowing the Islamic Republic to conduct a domestic attack.

Iranian lawmakers announced on Tuesday that they would pay a "three million dollar award in cash to whoever kills Trump."

The bounty is the latest in a series of increasingly direct threats by Tehran. It has renewed concerns about the Islamic Republic's vast terrorism network, which stretches into the continental United States, U.S. officials and experts told the Washington Free Beacon.

While Iran has failed to pull off a strike in America, it is seen as having the resources necessary to do so. Several Iranian Americans have been arrested in recent years and charged with surveilling potential terror sites for a strike.

Iran's capabilities stretch beyond lone wolves and sleeper cells stationed in America. Iranian terror proxies such as Hezbollah have long operated across Latin America, including along the U.S. southern border. Iran also has established a network of individuals tied to its Quds Force, a wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that specializes in unconventional warfare, sources said.

"As [Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Bob] Menendez recently said, Iran has sleeper cells across the United States, possibly backed by sympathizers and supporters of the Quds Force," one senior congressional official who works on national security matters told the Free Beacon. "No one who follows this issue or gets regular briefings doubts that danger. The difference is that some people think that's a reason to sanction the mullahs, while other people think it's a reason to appease them."

As recently as 2018, lawmakers warned that Iran poses "a direct threat to the homeland," particularly via "sleeper cell" militants stationed throughout the United States.

The threat of Hezbollah and Iranian support for the group was outlined during a 2018 congressional hearing on Iran's spying ability. Two individuals who had received weapons training from Hezbollah were arrested in 2017 for plotting terror attacks in New York City and Michigan.

Experts on Iran's terror operations told the Free Beacon at the time that Hezbollah poses a serious threat to the United States due to its coordination abilities.

HSI employs a victim-centered approach, where equal value is placed on the identification and stabilization of victims, as well as the investigation and prosecution of traffickers.

Human trafficking victims have been found in various communities globally and nationwide with labor trafficking occurring within agricultural work, hospitality, restaurants, domestic work, sweatshops and other industries. Sex trafficking is typically found within residential brothels, forced prostitution facilitated online, business fronts for prostitution (i.e., illicit massage parlors), or on the streets.

These victims are men, women, and children of all ages and can include U.S. citizens and foreign nationals. Many of them thought they had found a good paying job or a better life, only to have their hopes dashed and work compelled.

'Almost a religious aspect': Tony Abbott downplays link between bushfires and climate change

Washington: Former prime minister Tony Abbott has downplayed the contribution of climate change to the Australian bushfire crisis, telling a US audience he believes the link between extreme weather events and carbon emissions has become akin to a religious dogma for many people.

In a speech to the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, Abbott also heaped praise on US President Donald Trump, essentially endorsing him for a second term in the White House.

"I'm not one of those people who sees the current bushfires as confirmation of all we've ever feared about the changing climate," he told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in Washington on Tuesday (Wednesday Australian time).

"I see the current bushfires as the sort of thing that we are always going to be prone to in a country such as ours - a land of droughts and flooding rains as the poet [Dorothea Mackellar] said all those years back."

Abbott, who serves as a volunteer firefighter in NSW, continued: "Everything associated with an extreme weather event these days is taken as proof of climate change.

"Bushfires prove climate change. Floods prove climate change. Superstorm Sandy, I think that proved climate change.

"Whether it's extraordinarily cold or extraordinarily hot; whether it's extraordinarily dry or extraordinarily wet. It all proves climate change.

"If you think climate change is the most important thing, everything can be turned to proof. I think that to many it has almost a religious aspect to it."

Abbott said the duration of the current bushfire season may be the longest in Australian history, but past seasons had claimed more lives and burnt out bigger areas of bushland.

Virginia Patriots Post Petition to Recall Gov Northam for Infringing on 2nd Amendment Rights

As Virginia Governor Ralph Northam simply has not learned how patriots deal with tyrants in America, another angle has arisen in which a growing petition has gained more than 65,000 signatures, at the time of this writing, to recall Northam for “infringing on 2nd amendment rights.”

The petition, whose goal is a mere 75,000, was started by Josh Bratton.

According to the petition, “We the people of The Commonwealth of Virginia feel Governor Ralph Northam should be recalled from office. Governor Northam has presented a state wide gun ban that would disarm law abiding citizens, infringing on constitutional rights granted by the U.S Constitution 2nd Amendment as well as Virginia Constitution Article 1 section 13. This kind of proposition is unconstitutional and should not be allowed.”

Clearly, when one simple cites the law, which should unite all Americans, and in this case, all Virginians, it is clear who the real criminals and traitors are. Governor Northam is just that: a criminal and a traitor to the people he is supposed to serve and protect their rights.

“His plan for implementing and enforcing such a ban would be using local law enforcement and National Guard soldiers to gather guns,” the petition continues. “Doing so would also be taking privately owned weapons from the ones ordered to enforce the new law.”

It would also be a violation of the protections of the Fifth Amendment that grants due process before one loses, among other things, their property.

“Law enforcement and the citizen soldiers have taken oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States,” the petition adds. “Governor Northam’s proposition to ban privately owned and registered weapons would violate such an oath.”

This is the most basic logic when it comes to gun prohibition or gun confiscation laws: Who is actually affected. The reality is that only those who are upstanding people will actually be affected unless you’re one that knows your rights and refuses to bow to such tyranny, which masks itself in the color of law while being lawless.

Florida Ex-Mayor Gets 4+ Years In Prison For Charity Fraud

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Guyland W. Thompson, a former mayor of Milton, Florida, and ex-executive director of the United Way of Santa Rose County, today was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion. Thompson, 65, of Milton, was ordered to forfeit $221,868.28 seized from his bank accounts and pay an additional money judgment of $430,132.33. Restitution will be decided at a later hearing. The sentence was announced today by Lawrence Keefe, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Thompson pled guilty last May to 20 counts of wire fraud and three counts of tax evasion stemming from his embezzlement of funds from United Way of Santa Rosa County while he ran the organization. Between at least 2011 and 2018, Thompson embezzled over $650,000 from the charity. He used his position and access to the charity’s records and bank accounts to steal money from the charity for years by conducting a series of complicated financial transactions to cover his tracks. He also made false representations to board members, employees, bank tellers, and United Way Worldwide to keep his fraud undetected for so long. Thompson then failed to report to the Internal Revenue Service the extra income from his embezzlement scheme.

“These crimes affected not only an outstanding charitable organization, but also the many individuals who depended on multiple nonprofits to help them deal with day-to-day challenges. This defendant violated the trust of all these innocent victims, and this sentence reflects the harm he did to so many,” U.S. Attorney Keefe said.

As a result of Thompson’s crimes, United Way of Santa Rosa County lost its charter with the international organization and was forced to close. The restitution Thompson was ordered to pay will be divided between United Way of Santa Rosa County and 15 local charities that previously had been supported by it.
